FHUG website slow

Is it just me, but in recent days the website often appears particularly slow to respond?
It will sit with Waiting for http://www.fhug.org.uk for many seconds before displaying a Forum or Knowledge Base page.
Whereas, at other times it updates within a second or two.

It is not likely to be my broadband which is typically 70 Mb/sec fibre, and my PC is wired (NOT WiFi).

Other websites seem to perform much as before.

Yes, it's been quite patchy. About half an hour ago it was very slow here but seems to be back to normal now.

Yes, same here. Very slow, almost unusable ... just taken around 30 seconds to load a page. My fibre broadband is fine - no problems with any other sites.

Yes... I've been noticing the same problem off and on for about a week.

I have a couple of websites hosted by TSOhost which are working OK.

TSOhost have posted a notice saying that there are problems with some websites and give the likely IP Addresses but as far as I can tell FHUG is not in that range. However they may not be aware that other IP addresses are affected so it may be worth Jane contacting their Support to get an update and a resolution.

Looking at a trace from my computer to FHUG's IP address it indicates that it is being timed out which is slowing down the connection.

The problem with it being intermittent is I need to time it just right so it's going slow when I contact them.

If anyone hit's it when it's slow can you check if it's slow in the knowledge base as well as the forum. The forum uses a database server, but the knowledge base does not.

I got a database error last night about 10pm your time so gave up. This morning though it is back to normal with no lag / timeouts.

However, this post took over a minute to post with Firefox just spinning.

TSO have offered to move the database to a new server, but I won't have time to do this at the moment as I will need to reconfigure the settings on all the elements of the site which use MySQL.

Jane,

Don't know if you still need this, but just now it is taking 30-40 seconds to load a page. I tried the knowledge base and it loaded right away.

Edit: Of course as soon as I posted this it started working just fine. It had been very slow for about 5 minutes.

When the Forum pages are slow, the KB pages also appear to be slow, but not to the same extent.

Saving Forum Replies are often the slowest operation.

Forum replies get processed by the spam filter, so that may be part of the problem, but as it's currently blocking 50 - 300 spam posts per day I don't want to remove it.

I'm still having very slow response numerous times a day and sometimes I can't get to the site at all. Is there any hope for a fix for the problem?

I have asked the ISP to look at the problem, but I suspect I will need to look for new hosting. However this is a major task for me as I need to research and find new hosting and organise the site move all of which will take many hours and I will need to pay for replacement hosting.

I agree with Bill that the problem still arises intermittently many time a day.
But it only started towards the end of July, so what happened then to initiate the problems?
