* Automatically list facts for a 'Place'

For Wish List Requests that have either (a) been progressed to the Wish List; or (b) been classified as duplicates, or as redundant because the requirement is already satisfied within FH and/or plugins; or (c) closed because it wasn't possible to arrive at a clear specification of the request within 15 months of it being raised.

Automatically list facts for a 'Place'

Post by Gowermick »

When in map view, after placing a place marker on the map, one is able to see 'instantly' by left-clicking the mouse on the marker, which facts are tied to the place, via pop-up dialogue box.

It would be nice if this useful pop-up was available when working with data 'places', rather than opening a new query window when clicking the 'where used' button!

My view is that if the dialogue box can be opened via the Map window (without closing it) why can't it be done in the 'Place List' window without closing the 'Place List' window or any open query window.

The code has obviously been written already to fill the dialogue box, so I think it shouldn't be too dificult to link the 'where used' button to open the same dialogue box.

I have changed the Subject from Automatically list people from a 'Place' to Automatically list facts for a 'Place'.
Is that OK?

Instead of using Tools > Work with Data > Places you can achieve almost the same thing using Records Windows > Places tab.

Select any Place records, and use Tools > Where Used Records Links Plugin.
Use Windows > Tile Horizontally/Vertically to see Focus Window, Records Window, and Query Results Window at the same time.
The Property Box can also float over them too, so clicking on a Query Result Set cell will display the details.

This technique has the advantage that multiple Places can be reviewed at the same time.

Mike,
The whole point of my suggestion is to NOT use a query window, but to replace the query window with the 'dialogue' , which is a quick and convenient pop-up, (its use should not be restricted to the map window).

For example, whenever I enter a place against a fact, it would be nice if, as I enter the place, I could open the dialogue box to see if any other events had happened there, without the need to have the map open!

If FH offers to auto-complete the Place as you type, then other Facts must have used that Place.
If no auto-complete offer is made then the Place must be new.
Is that enough indication, or do you actually want to know what the other Facts are?

What is suggested can be achieved in a 3 'click' dialogue, which doesn't seem too onerous:

1. Click the Place '...' in an Individual's Property Box
2. Click on 'More' on Pop-Up Place List Window
3. Click on 'Records' to see a straight List of all Individuals with a Fact/Facts connected to the Place; or, for more detail 'Where Used" for an on Screen Report which details all Individuals & their Facts/Events linked to the Place'

Mervyn,
I'm afraid you too are missing the point! I do NOT want a query opened. The dialogue box works well in map window WITHOUT opening a query window. All I'm asking is that the same dialogue box is opened INSTEAD of a query window when one clicks 'where used', whatever window one is in.

Mike.
I just want the 'map' dialogue box to open, to see who has used it before, I'm not worried if it is a new place, as I know then that no Events have previously used the place. ( which the dialogue box will tell me in any case)

If you only want to see who has used the Place before then the Records button will already do that in a popup, and it works for every kind of Work with Data (Places, Addresses, Occupations, Religions, etc).

Mike,
Sorry, I don't follow. what do you mean?

Edit:

Ah, got you. I didn't realise that is what the 'records' button did, as I've never used that option.
Howver, that's fine for 'work with data' window, but could method be extended to entering facts?
i.e As I enter a place, right click and up pops a similar dialogue box.

Having entered the Place name, and FH has offered to auto-complete, then you know there is another usage.
So click the [...] edit button to right of Place field to open Work with Data dialogue with Place pre-selected.
Then click More>> button and finally click Records button.

OK, so it is three mouse clicks instead of one right-click, but is that satisfactory?

And bear in mind it works just the same for Addresses, Occupations, Religions, etc.

I'd prefer a single right-click, but I can live without it. As for other data, I'm not too interested, a bricklayer in Manchester has no discernable/useful link with one in Clacton, so of little benefit. :D
