Mike,

I just uploaded exactly what I wanted on both Ancestry and FTDNA. Only one error report -

Line 1
Char 45041
Error Syntax error
Code 0
URL <Admin edit removed source code dump as it had nothing to do with the export>

Selected "Yes" to continue script and it appears to work.

George, can you expand on the error report.

Was it from Ancestry or FTDNA?

It looks rather odd if really on Line 1 at Char 45041 as that is a VERY long line.

The URL just produces a load of gibberish text !

Mike,

I just went through the process again and did not get the error message. I used separate copies of my original project for each. Both uploaded successfully and work correctly.

The error message I listed is all correct. I did a screen grab and tried to copy it to my previous post but had no luck.

I will be using the plugins every month or so. I will let you know if I come across the error again.

George, the error message might be correct, but what produced it?
Was it a Plugin and if so which one (but does not look like a Plugin message), or was it Ancestry or was it FTDNA?

To post a screenshot you cannot copy & paste.

Mike,

I exported a new copy of my file for an Ancestry upload. I haven't actually uploaded it as I managed to do that the other day.

I ran Clean Living Persons - all OK
Trim Date & Text Fields - all OK

I clicked on Run for the Export Gedcom File but before I could click on, or set, any options that same error message popped up ?

I clicked Yes to continue running the script. The error message window closed.

Then I am shown a window with "Export Gedcom File - Version History". I clicked - Close.

Then I'm back at the Export Gedcom File 3.9 . I set the options and click Run.

Then I get Export Gedcom File 3.9 Memo . I select - Close Memo

Then I'm back at the Plugins window.

The 2 progress indicators work fine.

It seems to me that the "Export Gedcom File - Version History" might be where the problem is. I have not duplicated the process for an upload to FTDNA. Happy to do that I it would help.

Hope this helps.

Mike,

I just recalled I did get a warning during Clean Living Persons stating -

Get Day Number issue for
12 September 1752
So replaced it with
2 September 1752

I clicked on OK to close the warning.

I've tried to find the date to see what might be wrong but it doesn't seem to exist. I will continue looking.

Assuming your preferences are set for the switch from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar to be in 1752, the problem with the date 12 Sep 1752 is that is did not exist. See the FH help file:
Most protestant countries adopted the calendar between 1699-1701. Great Britain, Ireland and the American colonies, did not switch over until 1752 - by which time it was necessary to cut 11days from the calendar, instead of 10, to bring the British calendar into line. Wednesday September 2nd 1752 was immediately followed byThursday September 14th 1752.
..............
For the purposes of calculating days-of-the-week and validating dates (between 1582 and 1752), Family Historian allows you to choose either the 1582 changeover date, or the 1752 changeover date (see Preferences). If your dates are wholly or mainly for Great Britain, Ireland and/or America, you may wish to use 1752

Doh.

Thanks Lorna.

It would help if mention was made in that error report as a reminder.

I have made a note to improve the Get Day Number issue message with an explanation.
In the meantime I've added Error Messages to the Help & Advice for plugins:help:clean_living_persons:clean_living_persons|> Clean Living Persons Plugin.

To find the date, use View > Standard Queries > All Facts and in Result Set click on the Fact date column heading.
That will sort into Date order so 12 September 1752 will be found among the Sep 1752 dates.

Or more simply use Edit > Find > Search for: 12 September 1752 > Find Now.

George, I am struggling to identify the Export Gedcom File problem.
Please use the info:forums#posting_topics|> Posting Topics advice regarding Attachments to post a screenshot of the error message before you click OK, and add it to new thread Help and Advice page Script Error Code 0 (17215).

The Export Gedcom File - Version History window should not be the problem.
That is displayed by Plugins of mine that have a Help & Advice window when the Plugin version number differs from the preceding Plugin run with the same name.

Have you by any chance experimented with the Export Gedcom File Plugin Version 3.9.1 attached to the thread Question about Export Gedcom plugin (17157)?
Or have you only just updated the Export Gedcom File Plugin from an earlier version via the Plugin Store?

Mike,

FTDNA have just rolled out a new version of their Family Tree software. They are busy migrating existing trees to the new system. This should, they say, be completed by the end of the month.
I will try the plugin once they complete their update.

Hi Mike,

I have just tried to upload an updated Gedcom to Ancestry. I ran through the "Clean Living Persons" , "Trim Date and Text Fields" and then "Export Gedcom File" plugins. Then uploaded the resultant file to Ancestry but strange things have happened. I went back and viewed the exported Gedcom file with Notepad++ and things looked OK. I did not open the exported Gedcom back into FH.

This is what Ancestry produces - note the bold digits following the place names. They, random digits, appear in all the place names.

George JAMIESON
1903–1974
Birth 1903 • St. Machar, Aberdeen1131
Death 1974 • Southend on sea, Essex2000

This is George Jamieson' entry in Notepad++ entry

1 NAME George /JAMIESON/
1 SEX M
1 BIRT
2 DATE 1903
2 PLAC St. Machar, Aberdeen
3 SOUR @S1172@
2 SOUR @S5@
1 OCCU Hospital Porter
1 EDUC Cuffley School 2 Mar 1914 from Southwold School. Withdrawn from Cuffley 12 Dec 1915 to Ponders End.

2 SOUR @S6@
1 FAMC @F4@
1 FAMS @F2@

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Short dates and place name for Gedcom export to Family Tree DNA

Post by GeorgeJ »

Hi Mike,

I've been investigating and found the numbers are not random. They are reference numbers that Ancestry assign to identify addresses. I think they refer to addresses used just in my file. They must have millions of address strings for all known addresses.

So "St. Machar, Aberdeen" is address 1131 and "Old Machar, Aberdeen" = 665

So, I assume they parse the Gedcom file, as its initially uploaded, and assign the reference numbers to normalise the place names to remove duplicates.

The numbers do not appear when using earlier Gedcom files. Therefore it is something we are missing.

The problem is when someone else does a search for a "George Jamieson" living in "St. Machar, Aberdeen" the match is not return as the George Jamieson in my file lives in "St. Machar, Aberdeen1131".

Any thoughts ?

Hi George,
I have just created a new copy of my test GEDCOM and uploaded to Ancestry but I cannot see any such numbers.
Exactly how do you display those place names with numbers?

Hi Mike,

"Jamiesons of Bellie inc unlinked Feb 2020" is my private tree. Contact me and I'll send you an invite.

If you view my tree and click on most names, not the initial only individuals, you will see the numbers included in place names. I just deleted my latest update hoping to get this sorted before trying again. So the numbers added are different from those mentioned above.

I don't think giving me access will help, as it won't show any more than your very clear screenshot.
I only have a free account but identical displays don't have any numerical suffix.
Also, my brother has a tree on Ancestry that I can access and its identical displays don't have any numerical suffix.
So don't know what to suggest.

Presumably, you have been through all the optional settings.
I've looked through them and cannot see anything relevant, but as a subscriber you may have more options.

It cannot be the contents of your GEDCOM otherwise the numbers would not keep changing.

HELP! ~ Has any other FHUG user seen similar numbers?

A question -- and I apologise if this has been asked/answered earlier in the thread: has your tree ever been exported from Ancestry to FH or another product?

Why do you ask?
I doubt if the tree uploaded today and shown in screenshot has been exported anywhere.
The snippet of GEDCOM posted yesterday looks perfectly OK.

Mike, those numbers haven't come from fH (not manually entered) so they must have come from somewhere else at some point.

As George has identified that they are numbers assigned by Ancestry, either it's an Ancestry bug that only(?) George is seeing (neither you nor I are seeing equivalent numbers in our tree) which seems unlikely, or at some point Ancestry has exported them.

I would investigate if (1) they appear in the FTDNA tree (if only to eliminate it as a source of contamination); (2) whether the tree being imported to Ancestry is absolutely definitely the tree being exported from fH. I might even go so far as to use RootsMagic Essentials to see what Ancestry actually exports).
