* Citations from Legacy are not shown in FH

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Re: Citations from Legacy are not shown in FH

Hi Mike

Thanks a lot for the many screen shots!

Method 2 is simple.

What I do not understand about method 1 is whether everything e.g. under Parish Register will end up in one place.

Tonight I will watch the the video again as I would like to do things the intelligent way not the stupid way.

I am very much into working smarter - not harder. And I guess it it natural to be a bit anxious to switch programs after having used one program for 18 years.

Though my trial is running out, without I can really test it, I think I'll buy FH as it really talks to me (I love data in tables).

The video is an excellent introduction to Sources and Citations within FH, but remember you do not need to use Ancestral Sources (which is a companion programme). Many people find it useful, as it speeds up entry of new sources and the associated facts, but you still need to understand the 'native' FH way of doing things.

Method 1 is the same as the Legacy Add a New Source... option and do not Add the Source Detail.

In FH use the Add Citation > Add New Source From Template... or Add New Generic Source option and leave the Citation-specific details empty.

Thanks Mike - Oh my God is it really that simple! Then there is no difference, just new names.

I'll put my nerve medication away :-)

Further to my earlier posting on Legacy direct import bugs, I have found and reported to CP that Alternate Names are now omitted, whereas previous FH 7.0 subversions did import them, and GEDCOM imports do include them.

Disappointingly, this is not the first time that CP have broken a feature that previously had worked for years.

That is really good. Thanks Mike for all your work - I have many individual with Alternate Names!

It might be because CP are to busy; then mistakes like this happens easily.

I must add that the methods of adding Source Citations that I described yesterday are not the only methods.
They expect the Fact(s) to be entered first and then the Source Citations added afterwards.

FH also supports Source-Driven Data Entry where the Source Citation details are entered first directly from the new source document that your research has discovered. Then as each of the Fact(s) are entered the Source Citation is automatically attached to them.
A typical example is a new Census return for a household of people. The Census details are captured first and then automatically added to each Census and Occupation fact as they are added to each person.
See the FH Source+ menu bar options:

Ancestral Sources supports all the FH methods to some degree.

To discuss this topic in more detail please start a new posting in the 'Sources, Citations & Repositories' forum.

If you remember, I raised a CP support ticket which identifies discrepancies between direct import and GEDCOM import from Legacy for not just the Citation-specific details but also the omission of Name Citations entirely and the omission of Alternate Names.

CP just responded saying: "Thank you for raising these issues. We have now confirmed what you're seeing. We have logged this for further investigation."
