* Converting a Custom Birth Fact

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

Converting a Custom Birth Fact

Post by WNMCG »

I transferred a database from TMG to FH that has a standard Birth tag and a Birth-Cust tag. All individuals in the project have one entry for their birth that are either recorded on the standard Birth tag or the Birth-Cust tag. How do you convert all Birth-Cust facts to the standard built-in Birth tag in FH? I want to completely merge the two facts. The imported sentences are identical.

Thanks! Wendy

Welcome to the FHUG Wendy.

For the benefit of others, this has already been discussed in the groups.io Email forum.
Wendy tried changing the TMG Master Tag Type definition for the Birth-Cust fact to use GEDCOM: BIRT without success.
She has successfully used the FH Change Any Fact Tag plugin to convert Birth-Cust facts to Birth facts with options:
Source Tag Set: TMG import
Source Tag Name: Birth-Cust
Target Tag Set: Standard
Target Tag Name: Birth

However, the Property Box Main tab still does not show the Born: date!

Wendy, what we need to see are screenshots of the Property Box Main tab and Facts tab illustrating the problem.
See FHUG Knowledge Base Forum Usage Tips for Attachments and Taking Screenshots.

We may also need to see snippets of the GEDCOM file for the problem Individuals.

To repeat the question: How do you convert all Birth-Cust facts to the standard built-in Birth tag in FH?

Wendy, in your screenshot of the Facts tab there is only one standard Born (BIRT) event.
However, it has no Date, so the Main tab, Born: entry has nothing to display.

The Birth-Cust event is still present, even though you said you had converted them all.
So you need to run the Change Any Fact Tag plugin again with the settings you quoted earlier and retain the results.

However, after conversion, the person shown in your screenshot will have two Born (BIRT) events.
Only the first one listed in the Facts tab will have its Date shown in the Main tab.

So you must either delete any such Born events with no details or apply the Preferred Fact Flag to the Born event with the preferred details, and I can explain how to perform those functions after converting the Birth-Cust facts.

It would be useful to know whether a large number of people have similar duplicate Born details, or that the person shown is an exception or one of only a few that can easily be corrected manually.

There are 156 individuals in the project with the Birth-Cust tag. I will make the change in TMG eventually and do the transfer again. It will be easier to manage that way and the output should be that all birth info appears in the standard Born (BIRT) event in FH. Thanks for your help.

OK. if you are happier doing that way.
The processes in FH are semi-automatic to bulk convert the Birth-Cust facts and bulk delete the blank Birth events, so can be performed very quickly, but I understand if you prefer to make the changes in TMG.
