* V6 - Further TMG direct import failures

Importing from another genealogy program? This is the place to ask. Questions about Exporting should go in the Exporting sub-forum of the General Usage forum.

V6 - Further TMG direct import failures

Post by JohnLiddle »

I am afraid that the TMG direct import in V6 is totally unfit for purpose.

Although the tags (facts) are imported, their contents are nowhere to be seen - by this I mean that a TMG tag for, say, "Occupation" transfers to the V6 project, the contents of the tag "Miner" or whatever does not.

Back to the drawing board I am afraid!

I'm surprised that you have had this problem. Whilst evaluating Family Historian I tested both direct import and GEDCOM import from TMG versions 8 and 9. All my occupation data transfered correctly from the memo in TMG into the fact in Family Historian. As far as I can tell so far I haven't lost any event data. There are some issues of formatting and punctuation that need tidying up and the few split memos I had look odd but generally I am very happy with the import process.

Sleepingwolf - I did not have this problem in V5 - have you tested V6?

My apologies. I was testing on V5. I must learn to read the subject lines more carefully.

This has been fixed since 6.0.2. See http://www.family-historian.co.uk/downl ... ee-upgrade for a free update to the latest version, for V6 users.

Just to add to Simons response, I have succesfully used the direct import in 6.0.3 (from TMG 9.0.5) - much improved on previous versions as I now see Source Elements (which in my case, hold quite a bit of data) imported and shown against the Source record in FH. Still a couple of minor issues (with the Source Element name in a couple of cases not correctly shown), but I have yet to find anything missing either on Facts or Source data.

Unfortunately, a few things are still not imported correctly, as documented in the how_to:import_from_tmg#import_guide|> Import from The Master Genealogist (TMG) > Import Guide.
i.e.
Every Citation on a Relationship Tag is omitted
Every Citation linking a Source to a Source is omitted
The Repository of the first Source Record is omitted
Every link from a Place, Citation, or Repository to its Media is omitted

BUT it is a great improvement.
