Norfolk placename
Any chance somebody can help me with this birthplace from transportation records for my 3 x great grandfather in 1844
It's proving a stumbling block on tracing family back before 1800

Re: Norfolk placename
Have you looked at the list of Towns and Parishes in Norfolk on GENUKI to see if anything might match?
My first impressions are that the second word might be Wotton (Wooton), but that is really only first impressions.

Looks like "Nr Wotton" to me, i.e., near Wotton. There doesn't appear to be a Wotton in Norfolk today, although there is Watton, and in my experience a lot of place spellings differed in their a/o letters. Use GENUKI as suggested by Helen and see if you can tie up the location with other records about the same person.

I was going to suggest Near Watton too, but Adrian beat me to it.

There is a North Wootton on the coast near King's Lynn.

Re: Norfolk placename
many thanks for all your input, I'd forgotten how much info is on genuki (thanks Helen)
I'd looked at the Wootton's previously to no avail, but briefly looking at Watton on genuki I notice a Saham Toney very close, where his first born was baptised ,so more trawling through church records to come !!
once again many thanks to all
Cheers

https://www.familysearch.org/mapp finds both North Wootton and South Wootton in Norfolk.

Ian,
Many years ago I used to live in Watton. Happy to help if you need any local knowledge of the town and surroundings.

At the moment I'm wading through Family Search parish record images in a 5 mile radius, to no avail.
If I have any queries I'll get back to you.
cheers
