Other Countries Census Entries

Post by rkburrows »

This is both a wish for the next version and a question.

I have census entries for France that I am entering. At the moment I choose the UK and then edit the dates to follow the French census dates. As an example, for the 1896 French census, I use the England 1891 as a default and adjust the year and date manually. Is this the correct work around or are there tags left in my GED file referring to the default country and year?

It does seems to work ok however it would be good if a future version included a blank 'country field' and 'date field' that would allow you to manually enter the country and date without warning message popping up that you have changed the default data.

Any views?

Roger

I'm writing an entirely new version at the moment which could incorporate the French census. This new version when it eventually appears will display different columns depending on the census chosen. It would be helpful if you could let me know some of the French census details, i.e the dates of available census and the columns included on each so I can try to build this in. I'd prefer to do this at least initially rather than build in the facility to edit your own country and census details.

It shouldn't cause you any problems doing what you are doing regarding changing the date. Where you may get confusion is if you use the automatic flagging facility.

Cheers

Hi Nick,
Do you have the 2 candian census details, if not i can send you a list of the fields. Also, as per Roger method i use this to enter a few of the US State Census, so if you wanted to add those in i can give you details for Iowa in 1925, Kansas for 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915 and 1925 (i am missing the full date for the 1925 Kansas census though).

Nick, might we get a recap from time to time of what submissions you have had so far, so that people aren't mailing you the information for country X's YYYY Census over and over again?

Also, what would be your preferred way of getting the data? Simple list of questions, a blank form, an Excel spreadsheet, etc?

Richard: yes thanks for those details, really useful.

Jan: I've got details of all UK census up to 1911. I know where to easily find later UK census details but I don't think there is much demand for these yet so I don't seem later than 1911 as a priority. Richard has sent me Canada 1901 and 1911 as well as the others he mentioned earlier in this thread: Iowa in 1925, Kansas for 1875, 1885, 1895, 1905, 1915 and 1925 with a list of the columns. I do think that actual images of an example census page would also be useful - alternatively if you can links to any websites where these can be easily viewed then that would be great.

I can't promise I'll be able to support all these census columns at least until a later version but I can at the very least allow the country/state and date to be chosen.

At some point I'll need to research the other earlier canada census columns, the US census and the Ireland ones that I have the date for already in GC but haven't got details of the columns in the census so any help with those much appreciated. I don't have a lot of motivation to do this as I don't have any of these records in my tree but if someone else does the research for me I have less of an excuse to ignore them :)

Thanks, Nick.

I have a couple of links that might be useful.

http://www.1930census.com/ has more than meets the eye -- in addition to the US Federal Censuses, they have the list of questions for the soon-to-be released 1940 US Census.

The links on the sidebar for international censuses and state censuses go to pages with general information about those censuses -- they don't seem to have detailed information except for the US Federal censuses.

More information about the questions on the US Federal Censuses can be found here:

http://usa.ipums.org/usa/voliii/tQuestions.shtml

They have the questions all the way up to 2000. [grin]

Ancestry has recently added the 1916 Census for the three Northwestern provinces in Canada, and has the 1906 Census for those also. Their 'about this database' pages should be viewable by non-subscribers but I can send you copies of the info if needed.

1916: http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx= ... 3a7858%3a0

1906:
http://content.ancestry.com/iexec/?htx= ... 3a7858%3a0

The list of all census and voter lists available at Ancestry:
http://www.ancestry.com/search/rectype/ ... aspx?rt=35

Naturally these are presented in the most annoying way possible, with only the US Federal, UK, and Canada censuses accessible in any organized fashion, and everything else tossed at the user in a hopeless mish-mash.

I found a link on the Library and Archives Canada for their Census research tools at
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/arch ... dex-e.html

The links on that page have some general information about the censuses and their holdings. They have:
  • Census Microfilm Reels from 1666 to 1901
  • Census of 1851
  • Census of Ontario, 1871
  • Census of Canada, 1881
  • Census of Canada, 1891
  • Census of Canada, 1901
  • Census of the Northwest Provinces, 1906
  • Census of Canada, 1911
  • Electoral Maps of Canada
Unfortunately neither site has blank forms available for download.

I'll keep an eye out for new censuses coming online and let you know.

Apologies for the delay in replying but I wanted to check as far as possible my facts.

In France, it seems that prior to 1881, the census was held in a particular year but there does not seem to be reference to a specific date in that year.  Since 2004 there is a rolling census with different areas being involved in the census in different years.

However going back in time it seems that the census were as follows:

18th December 1881
30th May 1886
12th April 1891
29th March 1896
24th March 1901

Happy to send you some pictures of the census documents confirming those dates should you wish and will try to find out some other dates.  I have checked these dates in 3 departements but I have to admit that I cannot be absolutely sure that everywhere in France also carried out the census on those dates

Hi Roger

Thanks for those dates. It would be useful if you could also give me some indication as to the columns of data about individuals used in those censuses or a link to a website that would tell me. e.g. Name, Age, Occupation, etc.

Best wishes

Hi Nick,

Here is a link of the information provided in each census

http://genealog.fr/sources/recensem.html#top

if you would like to see some census (recensements) documents they are freely available on the web. Here is one departement example

http://www.archives-vienne.cg86.fr/nume ... ement.php3

These are for the Vienne departement just click on any 'localite' and you can view the census returns

Hi Nick,
I've just added the Census of Ireland 1911 to the FHUG Links page:
http://www.fhug.org.uk/cgi-bin/index.cg ... rces&id=23
I presume you may already have all the relevant details, or can download them yourself, but I could send you a few PDFs if you let me know. (I also have an example download from the 1930 US census.)

The new program has a system for entering your own census country/year details with the ability to share them with others (e.g. on this website). Its taking ages to finish and I get so little time nowadays but I'm not a million miles away now.

Hi Roger,

I am trying to find more info on some of my family who lived, married and gave birth in the centre of Paris around 1880 working at the C of E Church in Avenue Marbeuf Paris.

Do you know of any website links which may be of help?

Mike
