media

Post by Johnr65 »

I bought a new pc in April, now the AS function of adding media seems to be very slow, it used to be nearly immediate but now it takes several seconds. Is this because my tree is so large (32K plus people) or that AS doesn't know where to find the media?

I wonder if this is related to your issues with media discussed in another thread today? Can you explain at exactly which point the delay occurs. Is it when you click on the 'Select File...' button in the Image Viewer?

AS intelligently remembers the file paths you use so that, for example, when you try to select an 1861 England/Wales census image it automatically opens the folder you last selected when you were working on an 1861 England/Wales source. It does detect whether the folder exists before trying to open the location and it uses the built in Windows functions to do this. It sounds like for some reason this check is taking a while and this is out of my hands as I'm relying on Windows to do this. I expect this is related to your move away from using google drive. What you could try (with AS closed) is deleting the file that records these locations. I think you will find it here on your computer: c:\users\johnw\documents\family historian projects\family historian projects\Rosser 100422\Rosser 100422.fh_data\Plugin Data\Ancestral Sources.appdata
Delete (or rename) the ASProjectOptions file in there.

Sounds like a network file location for a location that can't be reached. I used to get this at work (before retirement) sometimes with network locations that are no longer reachable. When Windows tries to connect to the remote location there is a 30s timeout in the network protocol waiting for a response. This can cause weird slowdowns for almost unfathomable reasons, such as an unreachable network location as part of the PATH environmental variable, and similar things such as applications that remember a previous open file etc. I suspect a Google drive location might behave the same after being removed (unbeknownst to the application). So, you have to either be patient until you get in and then change what it has remembered (by opening a new reachable file), or go backdoor and remove it manually from saved settings.

Just some thoughts that came to mind when reading the post thread.

I've been so long discussing my project problems with Mike that I'm sorry to say, Nick, that I've only just got round to your reply. However I've followed your thread and have deleted the relevant ASProjectOptions file so will see if that cures the problem.

It hasn't helped Nick, still about the same delay searching for the downloaded image. Would it be best to uninstall AS and reinstall it?

Has this slow response just started happening?
Did it behave OK when you first got the new machine?
Where are the files located?

I don't think reinstalling AS will make any difference.

I think in your discussions with Mike in the other thread you ended up moving the project's location slightly. So please can you make sure that you delete the following file with AS not running:

c:\users\johnw\documents\family historian projects\Rosser 100422\Rosser 100422.fh_data\Plugin Data\Ancestral Sources.appdata\ASProjectOptions.XML

If you can make sure that is the case and then try creating a new entry in AS, add an image, etc. and once done close AS. Assuming it was still slow to load the file open dialogue can you then send me a copy of the above XML file (it will have been recreated when you ran AS) - please send via email to nick AT ancestralsources DOT com

Thanks

Nick

Just to reinforce what Nick has said...

Delete the file ASProjectOptions.XML in the folder he specified.

To compose his Email address replace AT with @ and DOT with .

It's as if you've ignored the very long email trail we had about this... As I said at the time, it seemed to me, looking at the settings file you sent to me, that AS is working correctly. AS is remembering which folder to open and AS is correctly opening the folder but for some reason it seems your PC is taking a long time to do that.

Yes Nick but it's still the same, I'd have thought that it would have remembered quicker by now.

I never use the Select File button. I open my downloads folder in Windows Explorer and drag and drop the image file in to the panel on the left of the AS Image Viewer. That's always instantaneous.
