Census Templates Back-Up

Post by ColinMc »

Am I right in understanding that the four folders contained in AS\Settings as well as the AS\Logs have no way of being backed up, unless done manually.

If this is the case, should there be a case for amending the Backup Options procedure to include these important folders which may have many unique personal changes?

Personally, I include them in my regular backups of my PC hard disk.

Welcome to the FHUG Colin.

The AS Tools > Backup A.S. Options command saves the AS Windows Registry settings in the AS\Backup folder.

Then as Helen suggest, all your important FH & AS folders and files should be included in your standard PC Backup regime as advised in glossary:backup_and_recovery|> Backup and Recovery especially the advice below Ancestral Sources Backups. These days a disk backup and cloud storage are good options.

Thanks. That is what I do already, and they're also on OneDrive as well, but I just wanted to check.

Particularly as the options set up features the three folders together,

I had made the assumption (perhaps understandably) that the backup would include the other two folders.

To be on the safe side, I've created a backup of each in the AS folder

You don't seem to have a backup copy of the Backups folder, which is advisable.

That is where backup GEDCOM are saved and also where Tools > Backup A.S. Options saves the Windows Registry entries that include all the Tools > Options settings, etc.

So it is important to use Tools > Backup A.S. Options whenever any Tools > Options settings are changed.

It is certainly a good idea to make a copy of those folders whenever significant changes are made, because the OneDrive copy will simply reflect whatever changes are made and may not allow earlier versions to be recovered. Although recent OneDrive improvements do claim it keeps a version history.
In addition, if Windows System Restore is enabled for that drive, then previous file versions should be recoverable.
Nevertheless, it is still advisable to keep backups on some other disk drive, external drive, pen drive, DVD, etc.

Thanks, but don't worry I do have plenty of cover.

My OneDrive is set up to permanently be saved locally to a physically separate local data drive which is itself then backed up daily to two separate disks one of which is 1 off site.

OneDrive copies are also saved locally on 2 laptops.
