Two burial entries

My ancestor died within the parish of St Mary's Portsea, Hampshire. I found her burial record in the collection of "Hampshire, Portsmouth burials" on the FMP website and used AS to enter the details including an image from the burial register of St Mary's.

I then found another burial record for the same individual, again via FMP, but this time from the burial registers of Kingston Cemetery, also described as the "Burial Ground for the Parish of Portsea". The details are the same as those from the register of St Mary's but there are additional details such as description of the deceased and a note of whether he or she was buried in consecrated or unconsecrated ground.

I would be interested to know how other users would deal with such a scenario. Would you use AS to record an second burial fact, using the details and image from the cemetery register, or would you simply amend the transcript in AS for the original burial entry to incorporate the additional details and then attach the second image?

I would create a second source (complete with image and transcription) using FH -- it is a separate document, after all -- and cite it for the existing burial fact and update the fact with any relevant extra details (and highlighting any contradictions if any and which version you accept).

Thank you Helen, that approach makes a lot of sense.

That general approach applies in many scenarios.
i.e.
Create a separate Source record with Text From Source transcript and Media image(s) for each separate document.
Then cite those separate Source records from the one Fact.

Only use AS to capture the first document.
Although, I think the latest version does allow extra Source citations to be added to an existing Fact.

Reorder the multiple Citations so the best are first.
i.e.
For Birth fact Birth Certificate is first.

Thanks Mike, that's very helpful. I hadn't realised that AS might allow for extra sources to be added to existing facts. Do you happen to know where I can find the instructions for doing this?

No special instructions are necessary.
When you select the key person, AS checks if a matching Fact already exists.
It lists details of the Fact and how many Sources already exist.
You then have a number of options:
  • Yes ~ Replace the Fact with new details composed by AS from the new Source,
and optionally retain all the existing Source citations.
  • No ~ Create a new Fact with new Source details, and retain the original Fact & Sources.
  • Cancel ~ Abandon using AS altogether.
Note that any Source Citations for Occupation, Residence, etc, will proceed as usual, so that might result in some duplications of such facts.
Whichever option you choose, manual editing in FH is always possible afterwards.

I think the St Mary's record represents the funeral service either at the church, or at the Kingston Cemetery a half a mile away by the vicar/priest. The cemetery record is for the actual burial. These cemetery records are kept by the city corporation & are not the church records.

Thank you for that insight Ian, but I suspect Lizzie knows that.
The question was how best to cite those two Source records against one Burial Event.
Should it be done manually or can AS help?
