AS doesn't recognise second marriages?

I have been using Ancestral Sources for entering data from E & W censuses and find that parties to a second marriage are consistently given a default condition of "Wid".

It is easy enough to correct but I wonder whether I have missed some setting that causes this behaviour?

No you haven't missed anything. I think it's just one of those things which are not as simple for AS to check as you might expect. It has been mentioned a few times over the years, for example here:
