Any users in Johannesburg willing to help please?

Post by Jaws01 »

Hello all,

Fairly new to this. I'm looking for a FH experienced user in Johannesburg, South Africa, that I may communicate with in order to assist me with my duplicate entries. Despite reading and watching tutorials I've not been able to resolve my problem and I'm at the end of my tether, immensely frustrated, and would actually like to speak/liaise with a human here in South Africa.

Kind regards,
Jaws

Welcome to FHUG. You're actually dealing with humans when you post here, you know :)

Why not post some screenshots of your problem and get some tailored advice?

Forum Usage has details of how to post screenshots, among other advice.

Are you saying the same Herbert Barnes is listed on those two Spouse tabs?
If so that is quite a common situation and easily fixed.

Do both tabs list the same Marriage details, same Note, and same two Children Desmond & Norma?

The duplicate tabs are caused by two Family records for Herbert and Emily Amelia Cox.
So those two Family records need to be merged but for us to give the best advice please answer the above question or post a screenshot of the other Herbert tab.

Also, please enable the Families tab, by using Tools > Preferences > Records Window and under Record Type Display Options change every entry to Always Show.

Ok, yes Emily has Herbert listed twice. Most of the information is repeated but I realised that was me entering data when I though I did not have it.

I've done as you suggested and switched to always show

Ok, so we are now going to find the duplicated Family records and Merge them.

Open the Records Window, and open the Families tab (next to the Individuals tab).
Click on the Family Records first column heading to sort the records alphabetically.
Scroll down to the two adjacent records ...of Herbert BARNES and Emily Amelia COX

Select both records by holding down the Ctrl key while clicking the records in turn.

Now use the Edit > Merge/Compare Records... command. Both records should be listed so click OK.
That should list all the matching details in the two records.
If all the entries in the * Merge * column are Keep, * Add *, or Null Merge then click the Merge button.
If you are in any doubt then post a screenshot of that Merge Records dialogue and do not click Merge.

No, they are Individuals tab records, but it looks like you have duplicated those as well.

Are those two records linked to the two Spouse tabs in your original screenshot?
i.e. Click the blue triangular button to open Herbert Barnes record and note his Record Id.
Return to Emily's record and repeat on the other Spouse tab for Herbert and note his Record Id.

Are those Record Id different and do they match the two records you highlighted?

This is now why I'd love to have a phone conversation or better still someone log in to my laptop and we chat whilst he/she indicates what to do. It's getting past my skills level now.

A phone conversation won't work because the PC screen won't be visible.
Is someone prepared to try the remote access approach?

However, we are still at the stage of discovering the extent of the duplications.

If you check the parents of the two Herbert Barnes records are they also duplicated or shared or what?
i.e. Perhaps the parents have two children both called Herbert Barnes.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your patience.

Ok. I think if you persist with this you will gain a greater understanding of how FH works.

I think the best solution is to merge the Family records not the Individual records.

However, I need to go out to a meeting soon and will be back later this evening.

Jaws, click OK at the bottom of your screenshot showing the two records on the right to confirm that the correct two records have been chosen. Then the Merge Records dialogue will open.

Ah, I think I've won the battle.

Merge done and so far all seems good.

One issue was that any new windows/screens did/do not open full screen so I did not see buttons to click at the bottom of new windows/screens. I will always now have to remember to ensure a new window is "full size".

Most grateful indeed Mike!

I'll post again here if I encounter any further issues.

Best regards to all from a chilly Johannesburg.

I'm glad that worked out OK.

Regarding windows that are too small, instead of maximising them to "full size", try dragging the border to make them larger, just like any other program windows. FH should remember the new size and position the next time that window is opened.
