Producing a Timeline of events for a place

Post by HampshireLass »

Forgive me if I have missed any topics on this, I have looked, but couldn't find an answer after a quick search.

All of my Family back beyond my Grandparents lived almost exclusively in Hampshire, England, and in a small number of villages.

I know that I have a knotty tree. I would like to be able to produce individual timelines for several villages showing all the Family events that took place there across all of my Ancestors, primarily BMD, Baptism and burial, and census records.

Is this possible please?

If so, can you point me to any references that already exist for this that I have missed, or, tell me in VERY SIMPLE terms how I can produce such a timeline.

Thank you

There is a Knowledge Base article on timelines here https://fhug.org.uk/kb/download/timelin ... -overview/ - don't know if this is what you are looking for?

Thank you for your reply.

This topic seems to refer to individuals, and the different reports that can be produced for them, whereas I am concerned with producing a report of a timeline of events for a Place, that includes all my Ancestors and their events associated with them, in that place. I am using V.7

That is fairly easy to do with a Fact query and filter it on the placenames you want.

A good starting point is the Events near place, which is a standard query, which you can copy and customise.

Jane

Thank you, I have manage to produce what I wanted with your instruction.

I didn't think to look directly in Queries. I was concentrating on Maps and Publish but hadn't followed through to Queries from there.

Help!!
I followed Janey's instructions and all seemed well, I even narrowed it down to the 1871 census for the village I was interested in. Then I must have done something wrong because when I went into queries again today I found Events near Place was under a new heading of 1871 census and it just brought up the village I was looking at. If I tried to look at another place nothing came up, it was just set for 1871 and nothing else.
Equally Events near place had disappeared from the heading Facts and Events.
I have tried to delete the 1871 heading but can't. I am scared to touch anything else in case I make things worse!!

This is how my query box looks now. Any suggestions, as simple as possible please?

Open that Events Near Place query that is catalogued under group 1871 census.
At the top does it say Events Near Place or Events Near Place (custom)?

If Events Near Place (custom) then on its General tab I suspect Group 1 says 1871 census .
So that is your customised version of the Query.

Check all the other Query groups to see if you can find another Events Near Place query.
Open that and look at its General tab and you will see Group 1 to Group 3.
For Group 1 click on the droplist down arrow and change it to Facts and Events.
That will put the query back in the correct group.

You cannot upset anything else in that query because it is a standard query that can't be edited.

Thank you for replying tatewise

It does not say custom when I open up Events near place

Events near place does not appear in any of the other groups.

Incidentally I added the latest upgrade to V7 today before looking at Query tab but I am sure that is irrevalent.

So have you moved Events Near Place back to the Facts and Events group?

If you open Query > All Custom Queries... is your custom Query listed there?

Hello again tatewise.

Yes thank you Events near place is now back in Facts and Events.

No the 1871 census is not listed in Custom Queries. It has disappeared altogether.

So may I just ask please:-

If in future I go to Events and Places, and select a village, it will bring up a list of all events that has taken place in that village.

If I want to narrow that down to say a census year how do I do that properly please?

Thank you Sally

After opening Events Near Place use the cog Query Menu to Save As Custom Query... and give it a Query name.

In that custom Query on its Rows tab add a Filter sich as:
Exclude unless %FACT.DATE:YEAR% equals ["Census Year"].
i.e.
Condition: Exclude unless...
Expression: %FACT.DATE:YEAR%
Operator: equals
Tick Parameter
Label: Census Year

Thank you, again

I will add all these answers to my "How to" Fam Hist Notebook because they are bound to crop up again in the Future, and I will have forgotten by then :D

There is some useful advice in the FHUG Knowledge Base An Overview of Queries article, including Creating a Custom Query and The Query Window FH Help page.
