COUSIN: is cousin same as 1st cousin?

Post by itr674 »

Using Family Historian 7.0.8.2.

1. The daugther of my dads bother is showing as my cousin, shown as "Cousin of Me"
2. My dad and is brother have the same mother and father, and my cousin and I have the same grandparents.
3. That cousins daughter is showing as "1st Cousin once-removed of Me"

The "1st" is throwing me. I thought my cousins daughter would be my 2nd cousin?

Is FH just leaving off the "1st" in the "Cousin of Me"?

itr674,

Your cousin's children are 1st Cousins once removed to you.

Your children and your first cousin's children are second cousins to each other.

FH does show first cousins as just "Cousins".

Cousins (also known as 1st Cousins) share the same grandparents and are of same generation, and 2nd cousins share the same great grandparents, and are of same generation, 3rd cousins share greatgreatgranparents and of same generation etc…

The once removed indicates that there is a one level disconnect between generations., i.e a grandchild and a greatgrandchild of the same person. As Bill said, your cousins children are next or one generation away from you so are your 1st cousin once removed

Find your first common ancestor or ancestors (first you find tracing backwards in time)
- if they are a couple, you are full cousins
- if you only have one first ancestor in common, you are half-cousins
Define your relationship to that common ancestor or ancestors and "Count the G's"
- "Great Grandfather" = 2Gs
Define their relationship to that common ancestor or ancestors and "Count the G's"
- The minimum G count is the "degree of cousins", the difference is the "remove"

So the common ancestor is my Great Great Grandfather (3Gs) and their Great Great Great Grandfather(4Gs), so we are 3rd half-cousins once removed.

Note that the direction of removal is irrelevant (a few try to distinguish but it then gets very confusing)
