FH V7.0.8.2

Post by laz_gen »

I have just updated FH to version 7.0.8.2 and it seems some settings have been lost.

The first thing I noticed was an internet hint opened in the internal window instead of the external browser as was set before.

The next thing I noticed was when generating a quick report, it looks like all setting had been reset to default.

A suggestion to others, if possible back up your settings before this update, unless of course this is just me experiencing this.

Anyone else noticed anything?

See https://www.family-historian.co.uk/v7-updates where under Miscellaneous it says:
"The default location for hints in Preferences has been changed to “Web Search Window” (was “External Web Browser”)."

It sounds like not only the Restore Defaults button has been affected but your chosen setting has been reset too.
It really should not do that.

It should not reset your customised Report Type settings.
However, it is wise to create your own Custom Report Type for such settings.

Similar problems of installation of FH v7 updates not preserving all user settings is a recurrent theme.
Using the Backup and Restore FH Settings plugin before installing FH is always a wise precaution.

I suggest you report the problem giving precise details to CP via http://www.calico-pie.com/osticket/open.php ASAP before v7.0.8.2 gets wider distribution.

A very prompt reply from Calico Pie

>> I noticed my usual report settings were different and included index, sources etc. where I had previously left them out. It seems like the report settings were returned to default.

Thank you for reporting that. We have confirmed that you are right. The upgrade caused report options to revert to defaults. That should not have happened. We will change this so that it does not happen in future upgrades.

and as a future precaution I think I will follow Mike's advice regarding the Backup and Restore FH Settings plugin and run it again prior to any updates.

Yes, they are getting poor at maintaining custom settings! As Martin says, it should not happen.

It seems the resetting applies to all Report types :o

What about the “Web Search Window” and “External Web Browser” settings being reset?

Have you reviewed any other custom settings for such as Diagrams, Fact Sets, Queries, etc?

Yes, I always use the Firefox external browser, but this was reset to Internal. I did wonder why it said it had to install a web component during install, (which I skipped over). Obviously, when I did check for matches, I got an error message because I didn't have the component installed!
Needless to say I had to reset it to use external browser and all seems ok

Response from Martin explains why Web settings wasn't remembered

"!This was by design and is in fact documented in the Version 7 Updates page in the Miscellaneous section (see https://www.family-historian.co.uk/v7-updates). Many people had stopped using the Web Search Window because it used out-dated technology. As we had recently fixed the problems, we wanted to encourage people to give the Web Search Window another try. However, if you still want to use the external web browser you can. This setting will be remembered in future updates."

I suspected that would be the explanation but it's not very user friendly if you really want to use an External Web Browser.

The Miscellaneous updates say:
"The default location for hints in Preferences has been changed to “Web Search Window” (was “External Web Browser”)."
That just refers to the Restore Defaults button action and says nothing about resetting the user custom setting.
I am still not impressed. I leave it up to you whether you want to take it further.

Is anyone else having issues downloading the upgrade?

I've tried on 3 machines so far and in each case it just hangs at 'Downloading upgrade file'
Two machines are running Windows 10 under Parallels and 1 using Virtual box
All machines have Internet access and FH can see the Internet when looking at matches in FMP.

I've looked on the CP site but couldn't find a direct download of the upgrade file.

Any suggestions?
