Online help and iOS

Post by Mark1834 »

Does anybody else have issues viewing the online FH help on an older iPad? Using my trusty old iPad mini (iOS 12), the contents frame on the left jumps all over the place, sometimes even disappearing off the bottom of the screen. Some pages even shrink as you view them, continuously redrawing smaller and smaller :o. It’s the same in both Safari and Firefox.

My wife’s newer iPad is fine, as is just about every other browser I’ve tried, including Chromium on the tiny Raspberry Pi and whatever Android/Linux system Panasonic use in their smart TVs.

The plugin store isn’t very good on the iPad either, so there do appear to be some compatibility issues between iOS and whatever web tools CP use to generate their content.

The online Help isn't (as far as I know) generated by CP, so we may have to settle for what we can get.

Not sure about the plugin store -- it's WordPress -- what are the problems you're seeing?

Same issue as I raised during beta testing - it just looks horrible. So much wasted space, and scroll down the list to see huge dummy screen grabs that add nothing of value. Having said that, not all the real screen grabs are useful...

This is the “what’s new” help page displayed in the iPad. The navigation buttons in the left column are about another full screen height further down!

WordPress is WordPress. Some tinkering might be possible... or might not be. It looks ok to me on an Android phone (Chrome) but YMMV.

Likewise when I expand the menu text I get a useable site... without any of the problems you report.

Agree - the online help works very well on my (small) Android phone screen, so I think it is just an iOS issue.

Not sure blaming WordPress for the plugin store holds water though. The KB is also WordPress, and that’s fine on PC, iOS tablet and Android phone. More likely, the KB designers just took more care in ensuring it worked on all platforms.

If you want to see all the plugins can't you use https://pluginstore.family-historian.co.uk/all-plugins

I assume it was not expected many people would try to use the plugin store on a tablet as you can't download or install anything. It looks to me like it's gone into "Phone" mode for your tablet.

I found IOS to be ‘intelligent’ in that if it ‘thinks’ there is a large image in the reply/screen, it shrinks the screen so one can see the whole image. In doing so, it naturally shrinks the text as well. I’ve seen this happen before on other sites and e-mails, so it could be the cause here.

Don’t know if this still happens, just a suggestion.
