Page numbering in Books,

Post by TotleyRover »

Hi
Is it possible to include the total number of pages? i.e. 1 of 20, 2 of 20 etc.
I have looked on the Page Layout tab of the Book settings, and there is no indication that this can be set.

Thanks

Sorry, but there is no way to achieve that.

If you knew that the Book had 30 pages and you entered =Page() of 30 into the Page Layout tab settings it would produce such as iii of 30 in the preliminary pages, although later pages such as 5 of 30 would be OK.

That is part of the problem as the Book is composed of both Roman numeral and Arabic numeral page numbers.

The customisations available to headers and footers in FH Reports and Books are actually rather limited, as you have found. A common workaround is to export the finished book or report to your word processor of choice as an RTF file. You then have the full power of your word processor to format it exactly as you wish.

Exporting as an RTF can change the detailed layout slightly from what is displayed on screen, so experiment to see what works for you. It would also be possible in principle to save the book as a PDF file to preserve the layout, then use specialist software to edit the PDF. However, not many home users will have access to such tools.

Just to illustrate what Mark says - the big problem that I see is illustrated with these two screenshots. The content of the text is not important - I'm only wanting to show how the text sits relative to the pictures in this report. The first screenshot shows the report how it's produced in FH and then saved as a PDF (which doesn't make any difference, so far as I can see).

The second screenshot shows the top half of the first two pages of the same report saved as a PDF.

Notice how the first version puts images and text side by side, whereas the RTF version can't do that. It's certainly possible to do that in MS Word and no doubt other word processors but whether it can be done in RTF, I've no idea. And when I say "it's possible ... in MS Word", I mean that I've done it several times and each time have to read up how.

Others may think of other issues but how many of them are crucial, you'd need to find out for yourself.

I have never bothered to save anything in PDF format. I always use RTF. That way it gives page numbering and I can enlarge the images to how I want them. I also end up with a contents page

Hello,
Many thanks to you all for taking the time to reply to my query.
As I want the book to be a pdf, I modified the book items to include space for the pdf file(s) I wish to insert.
This way the page numbers in the index will come out are correct.
I've been using the sample project to work things through.
See attachment.

I do have a pdf editor app (Mac PDF Expert) within this app I can merge the FH Book with other pdf files.
These merged files will need their page numbering modified to line up with their position(s) in the FH book.

Ideally, I would like the content of these files to be a set of appendices.
The FH Book creator doesn't seem to support Appendicies, only Chapters.

Could I label the Free Text chapter heading as Appendicies?
If so how do I do it?
Gordon

Yes, in the Book Editor select the Free Text item and click Settings below, then enter the Appendix title as the Heading.
However, it will still be given a chapter number.
