Name suffix

Post by jbyronsinger@aol,com »

When I started using FH I entered an ancestor name as Simon Singer III, FH sorts the name as III (as I) instead of Singer (as S). I would like to correct the name so its sorts with Singer while still maintaining the content I entered as Simon Singer III . I have read responses to similar questions but none seem to address my particular sin.

Welcome to the FHUG.

In Tools > Preferences > Property Box set Show Surnames Between Slashes to Always

Then ensure the Name is shown as Simon /Singer/ III

Otherwise, FH always assumes the last word in the name is the Surname and puts that between the slashes.

Mike, if it is only one individual in the tree that's showing incorrectly, wouldn't it be easier just to go into that person's record and manually put a slash before Singer? That's what I do when I don't know a woman's maiden surname and I want her to be shown as Ann (John SMITH's wife), and it seems to work.

Kim, yes, it might be possible to work out how the slashes need to be repositioned, but for a very new user it is easier to see exactly where they are and changing the Preferences setting ensures that.

In this case, the Name must be changed from:

Simon Singer /III/
to
Simon /Singer/ III

which involves more than just inserting a slash before Singer that would result in Simon /Singer III/ and not what is needed.
