FTP to Rootsweb

Post by Bill Deverell »

Can any body remember how to FTP to Rootsweb..
I've lost my settings for IPSwitch and ned to upload replacement info.
Rootsweb confuses me with Freepages and Communities etc
The hierarchies overlap.

Rootsweb have some instructions at https://support.rootsweb.com/s/article/FAQ-freephelpftp but I'm pretty sure these are out of date. A few years back, after Rootsweb had been offline for a while they put out some new information in a blog; I bookmarked it but the page and/or whole blog now seems to have been hijacked and I can't get to it.

However, what works for me (which is based on what would have been in the blog) is:

File protocol: SFTP
Host name: sitesuser.rootsweb.com (note the 's' in the middle of 'sitesuser')
Port number: 22
User name and Password: (whatever yours are - these didn't change)

Within the folder relating to your user name there may be a number of folders with names ending "_html". I upload to genealogy_html

When the service restarted, new URLs were introduced. The old ones possibly still forward to these, but the one for my site is now in the format

Code: Select all

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~username/
- replace 'username' with whatever yours is; the symbol before it is a tilde (~).

Are you talking about Rootsweb WorldConnect and uploading a GEDCOM file?

The Export Gedcom File plugin supports Rootsweb with advice at Export Gedcom File (RWW) RootsWeb WorldConnect.

Bill - I've never used WorldConnect, but if that's what you're asking about, then as well as what Mike has written you might need this page at Rootsweb - https://support.rootsweb.com/s/article/ ... 0087062444

However, I've no idea whether it's still current or whether, like Freepages, it's been changed.

Bill - if you're trying to upload to WorldConnect I don't think I can help you.

If on the other hand you're trying to upload to Freepages then my comments about FTP settings are probably relevant.

I don't think I ever looked at WSFTP, but I do remember that one or two FTP programs didn't seem to work for me, and one of them might have been Filezilla. The one I have now, which works well, is WinSCP (https://winscp.net/eng/index.php). It's free, so maybe worth a try.

I've made some progress.
It was all down to the Rootsweb crash several years ago.
RW have reset the account and associated it with my current e-mail addr
and sent Filezilla instructions, and all I need now is a working password.
The RW process to change PW appears to be broken.
I can request a new PW but the Email containing the "change PW" link hasn't arrived after more than 24 hours.
SPAM folders are all empty.
