FH 7 install
Hello all, especially fellow Beta testers.
So, I am about to order my copy of FH7.
My question is, I have FH6 and 7 beta installed.
Does the full version update one of these installs or is it entirely standalone like the beta?
Just wondering if I need to 'tidy' up after. Perhaps remove the beta if it updates the v6 folders?
Thanks
Neil

It will update FH6. I'd tidy up beforehand, personally.

Thanks Helen
I have my V7 data separate, so I can point the update to that.

Re: FH 7 install
If I understand the install process correctly, you will have FH7 and FH7 beta alongside each other if you don't delete the beta first. That could be useful for copying any customisations you have made (source templates, standard text, etc) across to the final version.

Re: FH 7 install
The Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings plugin may be worth running to save both the FH V6 and the FH V7 beta customisations, so you have an archive that you can draw upon as necessary.

Re: FH 7 install
Didn't think to unistall 7 beta before installing the FH7 upgrade over FH6.2. Could someone reassure me that it is OK to still just uninstall the beta copy and that it will have no effects on FH7 (I worked just on a test project with the beta installation so don't have any new customisations I wish to transfer over).

Re: FH 7 install
Nobody but CP can give an absolute assurance, but I looked at this in detail during the beta, and it uses completely different Registry keys, ProgramData, and AppData folders, so can be installed or uninstalled completely independently of the commercial version, irrespective of whether it is FH6 or FH7.

I agree with Mark -- uninstalling the Beta after installing FH7 had no ill effects.

Re: FH 7 install
I agree, but it probably does NOT remove the beta Projects, ProgamData, AppData, or Windows Registry keys.
So they will need purging manually.
Do you need more detailed advice on how to do that?

Re: FH 7 install
Mike,
I know I would love some info on this. I uninstalled the beta and manually deleted the beta folders in AppData and ProgramData, but I didn't think of the registry. What is left over there?
Thanks,
Bill

Re: FH 7 install
They are all in these two HKCU and HKLM keys and their subsidiary keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Calico Pie\Family Historian 7 beta
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\WOW6432Node\Calico Pie\Family Historian 7 beta
BTW: If yours is a 32-bit PC then the WOW6432Node folder will be omitted.
Those keys will be alongside the Family Historian released version keys whatever the FH version.

Re: FH 7 install
Mike,
I have a 64-bit PC.
Neither of these keys exist in my registry. The corresponding Family Historian keys do exist. Looks like the uninstall must have removed the beta keys.

Re: FH 7 install
I guess so. It is a looooong time since I uninstalled any FH program.
That makes using the Backup and Restore FH Settings plugin imperative if you ever need to uninstall and reinstall FH.

Re: FH 7 install
Uninstalling the beta is the first time I've uninstalled FH in a long time as well. I run the plugin any time I make any changes to FH so I am well prepared.

Re: FH 7 install
I can confirm that FH uninstall clears the Registry, but a key saved with Reg export (as per this batch file approach) is readily restored. I used this extensively during beta testing to restore FH to a known condition.
