Thanks

I assume you mean you have previously purchased FH on a CD (rather than as a download). This is the advice in the Knowledge Base:
If you only have an Installation CD, but your new PC is a Netbook/Laptop with no CD drive, then on any PC with a CD/DVD drive, copy the entire contents of the Installation CD onto a USB pen drive memory stick and install from that instead by running the Setup file.

Hi Lorna,
Yes, correct FH purchased on cd. Is it possible to obtain FH as a download?
I have a ?download / link which I obtained when my PC caused errors on old FD programme and I had to re install . Would that work ?

Thanks for your assistance.

You seem to have had problems in April last year when you started this topic: re installing original Family Historian programme (16799)

It was explained there (by Mike Tate) that:
"You don't need the FH V4 CD so may as well throw it away.
You only need the latest purchased Upgrade FH V5 to V6 installation media and last two sets of licence keys."

It's not clear whether you successfully solved your problem back then. If you did, and you followed the advice to make an archive copy of the (download) insatallation files, you should have all you need to reinstall FH without using the old CD. Otherwise please read the April 2019 topic again and follow the advice there, particularly the link to how_to:family_historian_licence_problems|> Family Historian Licence Problems.

Hi,
Yes, thanks , past problem solved with the given advice and links.
This time I have to move to new laptop but if I can use the links previously sent then problem solved. Do not know if they are the latest purchased upgrades but they did work.

Thank you.

Kind regards

Yes, just repeat the steps you took last April, but this time with the new PC/laptop. As long as you are able to install version 6 (even if it's an early version 6) you can then go to this page https://www.family-historian.co.uk/downloads to download the latest free upgrade to version 6.2.7

You will then need to copy your FH project data from the old to the new laptop. See this page in the Knowledge Base for guidance how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide

In FH use Help > About Family Historian and it tells you the Family Historian Version at the top.
If it is already Version 6.2.7 then you are good to go as you have the latest.

A bit off topic, but an alternative solution to a wider problem. If you have a load of installation CDs, as I did, and a new laptop with no CD drive can I suggest the purchase of an external USB connected DVD/CD drive. I paid £15.99 for mine and problem solved.

Hello,
Just one last thing. If all else fails , if I purchased a new FH programme ,and downloaded it onto new laptop could I then open new project and download saved data from iCloud ?

Thanks

Yes, but dispel those negative thoughts because it won't fail.
Just repeat exactly what you did on old PC last April and it will work.

Yes, you can almost certainly restore your Project from iCloud.
The exact method depends on what you have saved to iCloud.
Is your Family Historian Projects folder synchronised with iCloud, or do you just copy Backup ZIP files to iCloud?

See how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide.

Hello,
I have copied backup zip files . I do appreciate that I would have to copy backup again to be up to date.
Thanks for help

OK, so on new PC in FH use File > Backup/Restore > Restore Backup and choose latest Backup ZIP file from iCloud.

But do perform the Media checks in the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide in steps 1) and 6).

Have you customised Diagrams, Reports, Queries, Fact Types, Plugins, etc, etc?
They are NOT included in Project Backup ZIP files.
If so you will need to use the Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings Plugin as explained in the how_to:family_historian_migration_guide|> Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide.
