uncategorised data

Post by Genie15 »

Hello readers,
I have some uncategorised data in two records.
How is the best way to modify as the data is required but as a 'Custom Id' with Gedcom labels of DATE, PLAC, SOUR, PAGE and NOTE.
Many thanks.

As a matter of interest, where have those Uncategorised Data Fields (UDF) originated?

The general advice is given in how_to:handling_unrecognised_data_fields|> Handling Uncategorised Data Fields (UDF).

However, in this case there are only two records involved, so can be adjusted manually.
If you cannot use the standard National Identity No. Attribute then create a Custom Attribute called Custom Id.
i.e. Use Tools > Fact Types > New button with Fact Name = Custom Id and Fact Type = Attribute.

Then you can manually copy the UDF values to the Custom Id values.
The Date and Place fields are standard Attribute fields and a Source Citation supports the others.

Finally, you can delete the UDF via the All tab.

Hello Mike,
The data I believe originated from importing a gedcom file from The Master Genealogist.
Meanwhile will try to move the data somehow as it is required. But, having trouble understanding the Handling Uncategorised Data Fields info sheet.
Also your reply mentioned 'National Identity No.' Attribute. I got lost.
Time for bed.

Sorry, because you knew it was an Uncategorised Data Field, and were specific about needing particular GEDCOM tags, I assumed you were familiar with the concepts.

Exactly where in the how_to:handling_unrecognised_data_fields|> Handling Uncategorised Data Fields (UDF) advice did you have trouble? Maybe the following tips will help.

Are you certain you have UDF?
Do they appear in the Property Box on the All tab with a * star bullet point?
Are they listed by the UDF List Plugin?

The problem is that there are many, many different types of UDF, and each needs a different solution.
Conversion to FH Standard/Custom Facts is just one of several possibilities.
Please post a screenshot of your two UDF using the info:forums#posting_topics|> Posting Topics for Attachments.
Then we can give you specific advice.

Hello Mike,
If I went to the tab All and deleted the UDF, the record itself got deleted.

I've cleared the UDF data problem.
I exported the record in question to a new GED file.
In a word-processor I deleted the group of data causing the problem.
Then imported to a new project and checked the data. All OK.
Then imported the modified GED file to the relevant project.
The deleted data was in another fact in the record.
No Uncategorised data.
Did the same to the larger record.
Learnt a lot and still learning.
Thank you for your help.

Hello Mike,
Sorry, didn't answer your questions.
I ran Uncategorised data from Tools.
Viewed the information on Records Window with the Named Panes Lists showing.
Clicking on the relevant list showed the * star bullet point.
That data was from a GED.com file. Presumably when I merged the files a few years ago.
Some help from the 'Handling Uncategorised Data Fields (UDF)' write up.

It is rather unconventional to use a word-processor to edit a GEDCOM file.
It should have possible to delete the data in a similar way on the All tab of the Property Box.
It sounds like you were not actually selecting the * bullet UDF item before using Delete, but selecting the whole record.
However, if happy with the result, then all is OK.
