Media sorting

Post by Johnr65 »

I've put a poppy as a media item in my tree for people who were killed in the 1st and 2nd World Wars; is it possible to set up a query to find all those with a poppy in their media? If not could one or two be set up to show those killed between the war years 1914-1918 and 1939-1945?

Sorry John, but I don't understand what you mean by "put a poppy as a media item in my tree".

Do you mean you have linked a Media Record of a poppy image to the Media tab of certain Individual Records?
That may be shown against those Individuals if it is the 1st Media image, but often may be hidden.
It is a little tricky to detect if it could be the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, etc, Media image, but its Media Record name is easy to check.

Or have you a Record Flag on those Individual Records and added a Poppy Icon for them in your Diagrams?
This would be the better conventional option, and much easier to detect with such as the standard Query Has Flag.

It is not going to be easy to identify those Individuals killed in the wars, unless you use the Record Flag option, or a custom fact such as Killed in Action, or the Death Events use a standard Cause such as Killed in Action. Just detecting those who died in the war years would include all those who also died of other causes such as natural death, illness, or accidents.

If you mean you have a media record which is an image of a poppy, and it is linked either directly to individuals or to facts, then just select the media item in the Media tab of the Records Window and look at the Links tab of its Property box.

Or select the media item and use View > Record Links.

Or select the media item and use Media > View Media for Selected Record. Then in the Media window double-click the thumbnail to view it in the main pane and on the Links tab you will see a list of linked records.

Or select the media item and run the Where Used Record Links plugin.

Yes I put a Media Record of a poppy image to the Media tab of certain Individual Records and have used it for all my people who were killed during the wars.
I guess then the best idea would be to sort by the year of death and then weed out the ones that didn't die in the wars; is it possible Mike, to make a custom query to do that for the war years please?

John, have you tried any of the simple methods I suggested to show a list of records linked to the poppy media?

As I said before, just because they died in the war years does NOT mean they were killed in action.

Use one of Lorna's methods starting with the poppy Media Record and list all the Records it is linked to.

I think that is a lovely idea. I would like to use it also. Won't it just be like adding a photo of the individual as the program doesn't differentiate between a face or a flower? If it is the primary or perhaps media for those people won't it show up as the first thumbnail on their focus window? Then like Lorna says just query all the people linked to that media. As others who died between the dates don't have the poppy they won't show up. Once you have the list their dates will be with them and you will know which war.

Thank you once again, the records linked to media worked great once I downloaded the plug in which I didn't have before. Found 75 of my people killed in WW1 and 41 WW2 plus some civilians who were bombed in London area.
Now Mike can you outline a custom query that would show people who passed away during the war years so that I can check that I've not missed any please?

You could start with fhugdownloads:contents:death_details|> Query:Individual ~ Death Details.
Alternatively, create a New Custom Query with Query Type of Individual and add some Columns such as Death Date.

The Rows filter tab needs four filters for the WW1 and WW2 start and end dates:
Add if %INDI.DEAT[1].DATE% was later than 28 JUL 1914
Exclude if %INDI.DEAT[1].DATE% was later than 11 NOV 1918
Add if %INDI.DEAT[1].DATE% was later than 1 SEP 1939
Exclude if %INDI.DEAT[1].DATE% was later than 2 SEP 1945

To eliminate those who already have a Poppy image use:
Exclude if %INDI.OBJE[1]>TITL% matches "Poppy Media Record Title"
Exclude if %INDI.OBJE[2]>TITL% matches "Poppy Media Record Title"
Exclude if %INDI.OBJE[3]>TITL% matches "Poppy Media Record Title"

where Poppy Media Record Title is the full title of your poppy Media Record.

Sorry I don't understand any of it, I've tried and tried and it says 'discard changes' at end and I get no results. The explanation is like Greek to me!? Nowhere does it say how to save it! Waste of time.
Probably simpler for me to go through my 21864 people in my tree one by one and work it out for myself!

John, please give a clearer explanation of what you tried and how far you got.
Do I take it that you have never written a Custom Query before?

Did you view the how_to:creating_a_query:married_women|> Creating a Married Women Query tutorial?
That gives an overview of the general procedure to follow.

I assume you used View > More Workspace Windows > Query Window to open the Query Window.
Then clicked the cog Query Menu top right and chose New Custom Query.
You entered a Query Name and left Query Type as Individual then clicked Create.

If you Run this new Custom Query it will list every Individual in the Result Set.
You don't need to manually save anything as every change is automatically saved.

For the moment leave the General tab and Columns tab with default settings.

Select the Rows tab and enter the first filter using the options lower left as follows.
Condition: Add if
Expression: %INDI.DEAT[1].DATE% ~ click [...] button on right to use Data Ref Assistant for Events > Death > Date
Operator: was later than
Value: 28 JUL 1914
Finally click Add bottom right so it is listed in the Filter pane top left.

Repeat that process for the other three Date filters I provided yesterday.

Now when you Run the Custom Query it will only list Individuals who died in WW1 or WW2.

When you have got that far, report back and we can refine things a bit further.

John, did you view the how_to:creating_a_query:married_women|> Creating a Married Women Query tutorial?
I can't believe that you have never Run a Query before.
Click the button that is a blue circle with white triangle that when you hover over it says Run Query in its popup tooltip!

Tip: The first thing I do whenever presented with a new dialogue is to hover the cursor over every item to see their tooltips.

Once you have Run your Query, I set you the challenge of thinking about what else it needs ...

It will currently list Individual record Names, so what else would be useful to see in the Result Set columns?

It will currently list everyone who Died in either WW1 or WW2, so what further Row filtering would be useful?

Very useful Mike and Lorna. I've now added in columns, individual and death which results in the list I wanted of 774 names which I can go through and check whether they passed away in the Wars.
And NO, Mike I've never set up a query, in the past I've used standard queries or custom ones that you've set up for me.
Recently set up an event for travel with your help but that's all. :D

OK, so now you could exclude all those Individuals who already have a poppy Media image linked to them.

On the Rows tab enter:
Condition: Exclude if
Expression: %INDI.OBJE[1]>TITL% ~ click [...] button on right to select Miscellaneous > Multimedia Object > Title
Operator: matches
Value: <poppy media title> ~ enter the exact Title of the Media Record for the poppy image
Finally click Add bottom right so it is listed in the Filter pane top left.

Repeat that but with %INDI.OBJE[2]>TITL% and then %INDI.OBJE[3]>TITL% just in case the poppy is not the 1st preference image on the Media tab.

It would help to know how you organise your Place names.
Do you have a fixed format where the County is always in the same comma separated Part?
e.g.
Newtown, Sussex, England
Tonbridge, Kent, England
Chelmsford, Essex. England

Those examples use the 2nd Part for County.
The Town is in 1st Part and Country in 3rd Part.

Yes I use say Brighton, Sussex, England; only gets more difficult if in the USA, Canada, etc where they have 4 or 5 place names.

Regardless of how you enter place names, think of them as a simple list of characters. Then all you need to do is check if the characters contain the text you are looking for, i.e town, or County or Country.

For example, if I wish to list all people that were born in Warrington
I add row filter as follows:

Set Condition: Add if...
Expression: %INDI.BIRT[1].PLAC%
Operator: Contains
Value: warrington

This way, it doesn’t matter how you enter your place names, the above expression it will simply look for any Birth Place that contains the word warrington, regardless of where it is in the text.

The more you play with queries, the more you’ll understand them and appreciate how powerful they can be.

Wow that's super and I even managed to 'sort' them from a to b. Have 1960 passed away just in Sussex. It's knowing what the abbreviations are for the 'events' so that one can originate a query?
Thank you very much.

Unfortunately, although that often works, it is not infallible.

If for example you were to set the Value to Ford it could find:
Ford, West Sussex
Ford, Northumberland
Ford, Shropshire
Fordham, Cambridgeshire
Fordham, Essex
Fordham, Norfolk

and if you forget to tick Match case then it will also find:
Ilford, Essex
Chelmsford, Essex

and many many more.

So as long as there is a comma separated field following the Place part include a comma.
i.e. set Value to Ford,

The Data Reference abbreviations are all supplied by FH.
In the Columns tab, use the Fields pane on the left.
In the Rows tab, click the [...] button to right of Expression box.
For Events click the [+] next to Events and so on.

BTW: Note that Mike Loney's filter applies to Birth not Death. So use %INDI.DEAT[1].PLAC% instead.

The technique you are using with Mike Loney's suggestion involves an Individual Query.
That works fine for facts that usually only occur once such as Birth and Death.
It does not work so simply for Family facts such as Marriage and Divorce.
It does not work well for facts that occur more than once such as Census and Occupation.
That needs Fact Query which is what my earlier solution uses.

Yes John, I explained that in my previous reply under "The Data Reference abbreviations are all supplied by FH..."

That advice applies specifically to Queries, but there are similar Data Reference Assistant dialogues throughout FH wherever appropriate. See how_to:understanding_data_references|> Understanding Data References.
