Hi
Just wanted to run this past those who are more expert than I.
I've recently found what I think (hope) is an Ancestor in one of my paternal lines, so I created a new Project with the data in it, amounting to about 50/60 people.
I would like to merge this with my main project, both projects having one common person in them (let's call him John Doe)
I believe the best method for this is to Copy my main project, and then merge this new 'main' project with the project containing my potential ancestors?
Is there a point somewhere in this merger that asks for common people - in this case just "John Doe"?
Thanks for advice on this one.
Neil

You would normally merge the smaller file into the larger one.
Does it ask for common people short answer yes, it will suggest them and you can match additional ones if needed.
Have you read through glossary:merge_compare_files|> Merge/Compare File?

Just felt a little nervous of doing it and wanted to check first.

Re: Join Two projects
It is imperative you merge the small Project into your main Project if you have saved any FH Charts (not Diagrams).
This is because FH Charts rely on Record Id, and if you merge the other way round the main Project will probably have all its Record Id renumbered.
As Jane says, the John Doe records in the two Projects should automatically synchronise.
A common mistake is to forget to check EVERY tab across the top of the Merge File dialogue.
However, in your scenario there should be few issues.
If John Doe was married in your main Project but not in your small Project then check that Spouse, Children, and Family details are correctly merged.

Re: Join Two projects
Make a copy of your main project first, and check that it opens ok. Then if things go really wrong with the merge and you can't easily backtrack, then you can just delete that main project and replace it with the good copy.
I always do this before doing any sort of merge, as even an apparently simple merge has a lot of things that may need to be checked and selected (as Mike explained), and it's easy to miss a step or select the wrong option.

Thanks for all the tips.
It all went very well with no hiccups thankfully.
