Maybe I'm having a senior moment....
Problem:
'Occupation' in the Individuals Property Box reads 'Scholar' from his first census entry.
If I change this to 'Doctor' this changes the census entry as well (so he's a doctor at 10 years old).
If I delete 'Scholar' it deletes the census entry for occupation (not really a problem for a 10 year old) - but now he's a 'Student of Medecine' which is his next occupation entry.
Question:
How do I override the auto entry, or get it to point at the one I want (in this case 'Doctor') to have as his 'Occupation' in the Property Box?
I've had a search through 'help' and also FHYG topics and haven't found an answer - what have I forgotten, or what do I do to get the right info in the box!
John

Re: Property Box - Occupation
As a newcomer, it is common to misunderstand the contents of the tabs in the Individual Property Box.
In simple terms, the Main tab is a filtered summary of the Facts tab, and that is a filtered summary of the All tab (plus some Facts from other Individuals). See the glossary:property:home|> Property Box Dialogue and its explanation of each tab.
So by default the Occupation on the Main tab is the same as the 1st instance of the Occupation on the Facts tab. If you change one, then you change the other.
It is possible to customise the Main tab to show the 2nd instance of Occupation, or the last instance of Occupation, or a number of different instances, but that will apply identically to every Individual.
I suspect what you really want is to show a 'preferred' Occupation on the Main tab, and perhaps in Diagrams too.
However, that is not currently possible.
The only option would be to create a custom Preferred Occupation fact, and show that on the Main tab, etc.
See Wish List Ref 11 Mark preferred Event/Attribute fact.

Re: Property Box - Occupation
I'm also having problems with this - is it possible to tell me how to customize the main tab on the Individual Details window to show either a preferred occupation or the last occupation recorded as I can't quite work it out by myself at the present?
Many thanks
Many thanks
Re: Property Box - Occupation
I haven't managed to do that; but I have removed the occupation from the main tab completely by clicking on the down arrow next to the cog and selecting Customise Data Entry . I removed Sex and Occupation and added Sex.
That way the Main Tab shows the mainly constant information. The occupation(s) can all be seen in the Facts Tab. A new tab could also be created - see More Tab Tasks on the Customise Data Entry screen.

Re: Property Box - Occupation
Andrew, as David says, use the Property Box cog Menu and select Customize Data Entry.
The Customize Property Box dialogue lets you customise the fields on the Main tab (and add custom tabs if you wish).
Untick Show most commonly-used items only bottom left.
Select <Custom Item> top left and click the > add button in the middle.
Choose Main area for Individual and click OK to open the New Custom Item dialogue.
Set the Custom Item Name to Last Occupation
Tick Part 1 and set the Label to Last Occ:
Set the Data Reference to %INDI.OCCU[last]%
Click OK top right and OK the read-only warning.
Back in the Customize Property Box dialogue, use up/down arrows to move Last Occupation up above Birth.
Click OK and the Main tab will now have a Last Occu: box, which is read-only so cannot be edited.
If you want to show the penultimate Occupation then set Data Reference to %INDI.OCCU[last-1]%
Set the Custom Item Name and Label appropriately.
If you want to show the second Occupation then set Data Reference to %INDI.OCCU[2]%
Set the Custom Item Name and Label appropriately.
You could also create a custom Occupation tab to list all Occupations from %INDI.OCCU[2]% to say %INDI.OCCU[9]%
As discussed earlier, currently the only way to identify a preferred Occupation is to use Tools > Fact Types to create a Custom Attribute for Preferred Occupation, enter that fact as normal, and create a Main tab field for it similar to above.
However, the easiest way to set its Data Reference is to use the <<Select button and in the Data Reference Assistant choose your Custom Attribute from the Attributes list.
