viewing reports within FH always defaults to page width

Post by jimlad68 »

When researching it is nice to produce a quick report of all of an individuals/family information.

Fairly standard, produce a report with your desired info, one really good advantage is that they update in real time within FH, no need to keep regenerating them.

The problem is this can take many keystrokes. I have come up with some workarounds below but wondered if anyone else had better ones; other than using things like autohotkey.

[1] Getting to the report. The fastest method I have found is to name my most used reports with a unique prefix, so that I can:
- select individual > alt+p, c, x (where x is the unique prefix of the report).

Also:
[2] Once the report is generated, it always seems to default to page width, which is always way too big print size. Can the default be changed?
My workaround.
- In report options > page layout > set the page layout to Landscape and juggle the bottom margin so that all the page's detail shows. Then a 'double' page down (1 pgdn for the bottom margin, then another to the next page). To get rid of the double pgdn I have tried making a custom page size in printer settings, (various printers and pdf producers), but the custom settings are not kept (a common problem as far as I can see).

[1] That Alt key shortcut is the best possible currently.

[2] The Report > Options > Page Layout settings can be saved with your Custom Report Type just like any of the other Options tab settings.
The only way to get File > Print Setup settings to 'stick' is to use the Windows Settings to set the Family Historian PDF 'printer' to be the Default and Manage its Preferences for page size to suit what you want displayed on screen.
BUT you have to remember to choose your real printer whenever you want real printout in ANY Windows application.

Mike,

thanks for the Alt confirmation.

Just experimented with the page setup. Your Family Historian PDF 'printer' advice works well, but as you suggest the quirk is that it also affects other printers 'within FH' while it is the default windows! The Family Historian PDF 'printer' is the only Windows 'printer' I have come across that keeps its custom settings across sessions.

For info, for my 16:9 ratio screen I use custom page size 210 x 380 mm (210 being A4 width), if you need bigger/smaller print size adjust booth numbers proportionately.

Yes the FH Report > Options > Page Layout settings can be saved, but I cannot see a way of saving the page width/ % setting. If that were possible there would be less requirement to mess with the default printer.

Jim,

I believe that you are probably dealing with a limitation of the OEM Developer Version of novaPDF that is licensed for use in Family Historian. Commercial versions of novaPDF do include an added ability to build and save multiple Private Profiles, containing print preferences, page sizes etc. specific to the application (do not affect other printers), but that feature is not available in in the cut-down OEM version as far as I know.

See: http://www.novapdf.com/novapdf-lite-des ... tures.html

An alternative might be to look at one of the alternative free PDF Printer Drivers, which might provide more options/flexibilty, e.g. Bullzip which does seems to allow the user some extra options.

See: http://www.bullzip.com/products/pdf/info.php & http://www.bullzip.com/kb/category/pdf-printer/paper/

thanks mjashby.

As regards FH and the problem above, I don't think that Bullzip PDF Printer is any better than the built in FH PDF printer, they both use the same procedure for a custom page size, (as do many/most? other PDF printers, inc Adobe), and both save the custom page changes.

However it does seem to have extra features such as save to various formats (like jpg doc etc), a bit like PDFill FREE PDF & Image Writer at http://www.pdfill.com/freewriter.html#2
