Full Backup per project several times a day.

Post by jsphillips »

On working on a project which I have several large ones
I find that I need to backup several times on the same project daily for security.
I see that each time it uses the preference file and the date.
This is OK but why do I have to create multiple backups on the project daily.
Is it possible to do a full project daily backup several times with the words "this has already been backed up today do you wish to overwrite ?
a Yes generates an overwrite, other than multiple daily different timed backups. Sometimes on editing a project stopping for refreshments phone calls etc I might have 6 or 7 full different timed full backups with same date ,same file name but different times.
I have looked at the backup settings but it does not seem possible.
Any help welcome please

I would never overwrite a previous backup in case file corruption has crept in meanwhile.

In any of the File Explorer dialogues when confirming to save the Backup you can also Delete any redundant backup files by selecting them and clicking the Delete key, or right-clicking and choosing Delete from context menu. After that you can click the Save button to save the latest Backup.

Thank you all
My point was that on a single day multiple backups could overwrite but on other days a normal backup ie 1 backup stored per day.
In any case every day I backup to hard disc and also at same time to USB drive as security.
It was just annoying to see some times as much as 8 backups with the only difference being time related.
kind regards

FYI: The Snapshot GEDCOM backups do only occur once per day, but do NOT include Media files.
However, since Media files are typically added into FH from elsewhere, that elsewhere copy acts as a backup.

So maybe you do not often need to perform FH Backups at all.

I don't use FH to make backups but looking at the process I would suggest one possible way forward is to remove the time when the save box comes up and then if there is an existing backup on that date you will get the overwrite or not option

I don't do backup everytime. Only once in awhile. Whatever changes I make to FH is 'saved'.
When I do a backup I delete the previous backup. If you keep previous backups it will reduce the storage space on your PC or wherever you back them up. So do delete old back ups when ever you can. Maybe keep two or three but any more than that delete them.

What is crucial is the Backups are on a different media than the FH Projects.
Otherwise, any PC/Disk crisis/theft will jeopardise both the Backups and FH Projects.

It is imperative that you Restore from those Backups occasionally to prove they are worthwhile.

These days storage is cheap, so too many Backups is better that too few.
