How many Grandprarents report by generation?

Post by Valkrider » 12 Jan 2015 06:48

One of the current flavours of the month on the genealogy blogs is how many of your grandparents do you have by generation.

I am sure that this is something that FH could do with a custom query but I haven't yet managed to get it.

Has anyone done a report / query like this that they are prepared to share?

This is Randy Seavers report http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CwqXwlgpY60/V ... 2B2015.JPG

I'd rather look for dead people than have them look for me.

Nice. I ran this on my file root (not me) and it picked up both birth and adopted families of one ancestor as can be seen in the Great Grandparents count and up (a bit).
It also makes one realise how much is missing :( .

Thank you very much. :D

I wish I was clever like you ;) I will run through this to better understand why I couldn't get it to work.

It's very basic, as it just does a simple IsAncestor check. Really it would be better to "walk" the ancestors to pick up things like Adoptions and also Cousins marrying. If you have one of those your maximum number of Ancestors drops and it does not take that into account, but just does a simple generation to the power of 2.

Jane

I have been thinking about your comment regarding the maximum number of Ancestors.

Clearly correct but it does depend on the family tree in question and I don't think there will ever be enough information to do an accurate maximum possible count in all generations. Obviously it is not possible to account for cousins marrying until you have enough generations to know that they are cousins. Another adjustment may be needed if an individual is an ancestor via more than one spouse and I am sure there are other situations which affect the maximum number.

I think the plug-in is excellent and does the job which I for one want it to do.
