Problem with PDF media in FH on new Win 8

I have had no problem re-installing Family Historian on to my new desk top Windows 8. All data arrived safely but I do have one problem, I've recently downloaded the Valuation Rolls from Scotlands People. These are pdf files and they are in "my documents". However when I click "add media" in Family Historian and click "from file" the window which appears shows "pc documents" and all other files are available within this except the valuation rolls. Is this because they are pdf and is there a way to change them to something that will move to Family Historian.

It is to do with the file types selected that needs to be All files (*.*).
See Knowledge Base > Adding Other Media and Knowledge Base > Multimedia File Formats for details.

However, if you want such documents to be immediately displayed in FH or in Reports, then they would be better if converted from PDF to JPG or PNG. See Importing PDF Files (10207).

BTW: Did you use the Knowledge Base > Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide to ensure that not just your Projects but also all your customisations transferred to your new PC?

Thanks Tatewise. I've selected "all files" and can now see the Valuation Rolls in My Documents and have copies them to the correct ancestor. As the Valuation Rolls are purely text I'm assuming pdf is better than jpg BUT if I wanted to convert any future pdf to jpg how do I go about it.

Your second question did I use the Migration Guide, as I am a novice with computers I let the company who built my new desktop Windows 8 transfer all my data from the old tower to the new one. When I re-installed Family Historian all my original data was there. I didn't need to do anything.

I shall deal with the second question first.
An important thing to recognise is that FH (like most other programs) stores things in many places on your PC.
You are aware of your Project data in the ...\My Documents\Family Historian Projects\ folder.
But custom settings for Diagrams, Reports, Queries, etc, etc, are stored in C:\ProgramData\Calico Pie\Family Historian\ and in the Windows Registry.
I suspect the company you used may not be aware of all these and may not have transferred everything.
Either now or next time, refer them to that Migration Guide for advice.

The methods of handling .PDF and any other non-image Media files (.DOCX, .TXT, etc.) are legendary.
None of those media appear in any of the Multimedia tabs or windows in FH nor in any Reports.
They can only be displayed in a separate window using another program by clicking the red triangular Open in Editor/Player button, which in the case of PDF will run Adobe Reader or whatever default PDF viewer you have installed.

If the media document is predominently text, then copy & paste in into a Text From Source or Note field so it can appear within FH and Reports, and also be textually searched.

In all cases convert the media to JPG or PNG image file format so it can appear within FH and Reports. This may have to be repeated for each page of a multi-page document.
See Knowledge Base > Downloads and Links ~ PDF Utilities for options.
Knowledge Base > Utility ~ PDF To Image File Converter is popular.
Knowledge Base > Utility ~ IrfanView is widely used and does much more than just convert PDF to JPG.
