Removing name caption from report
Hi,
When I create an Summary Report for an individual, I wish for captions to be present under photos. But, I don't want the name of the individual to be present before the photo's title. I can't seem to find any obvious way of removing the name from the caption.
Does anybody please know of a way to do this?
Kind Regards,
Craig Mollekin

Re: Removing name caption from report
I guess you are using the following settings on the Report Options > Pictures tab:
Ticked Show Captions with Pictures
Clear Inc. Year of Picture
Clear Inc. Individual's Age at Picture Date
Ticked Inc. Picture Title...
The only way to exclude the Individual's Name from the Caption is to take a different approach.
Open the Property Box of the Individual and on the Multimedia tab Edit each image.
Tick the Use Note as Caption option bottom right.
Copy the Title text to the unlabelled box next to that ticked option.
This caption overrides all Report Option > Pictures tab settings shown above except the first one.
If you have a lot to do then a Plugin might help.

Thanks, Mike. However, there would be around nine thousand individuals to edit. I'll live with the caption I think

Re: Removing name caption from report
Craig, how easy would it be to identify all the Multimedia Records that needed changing?
Do they have a particular Title format, or File folder, or Keyword to differentiate from other Multimedia?
If so, I could probably write a custom Plugin to do the job.

Re: Removing name caption from report
Hi Mike,
It's not a massive worry, so I don't want to put you to any trouble if you think it might give you a headache
I wouldn't want a caption on any of the main profile pictures as I have them labelled them already. But, I suppose the photos that I particularly have a problem with are ones that that begin with a letter in brackets, for example (A), (B), (C) .... all the way up to (Z). They do all reside in a particular folder, but the photos are in sub folders, for example:-
-Saint Margaret's Church, Swinton
--A Section
---(A) 4 Chapman - 20.03.09
-Saint Margaret's Church, Swinton
--B Section
---(B) 345 Hague - 28.02.08
So, all the photos reside in sub folders of 'Saint Margaret's Church, Swinton.
I hope that makes sense
But like before, it's not a big deal if I have to have the captions.

Re: Removing name caption from report
I have a prototype Plugin for you to try, but can you answer one more question.
Are each of these photos only ever linked to one Individual Record?
To double-check look at the Multimedia Records, either via the Records Window > Multimedia tab or the Multimedia Window.
Expand the records by clicking on the [+] to their left.
Is there only ever one Link/Note field for the records we want to change?

So would you want the Use Note as Caption option to apply to all the linked Individuals?

OK then, make sure you have at least a Small GEDCOM Only Backup just in case!!
Install the Plugin from my OneDrive Title to Caption.
When run it will process 10 Multimedia and allow you to Abort and check the changes.
Run it again and click Retry a few times and then Abort to check more changes.
If all looks OK, then run again and click Ignore to process all the Multimedia.
The Plugin will report when finished, but may run for a while, as you have a lot of media!!
At any stage, if you don't like the changes, then use Edit > Undo Plugin Updates before using Save.

Re: Removing name caption from report
Hi Mike,
Apologies for my tardy reply.
I've just downloaded and tried the plugin and it works great! It has removed captions from all of the photos held in all folder locations.
That's brilliant; I really appreciate it. I hope somebody else will find it of use also so I don't feel guilty for you making me a special plugin

Re: Removing name caption from report
I am glad that Plugin worked for you Craig.
You say "It has removed captions from all of the photos held in all folder locations."
I think what you mean is it has set the Use Note as Caption option and set the Caption Note equal to the Title, thus removing the Name of the Individual from the text under each photo in Reports.
I hope it has actually only changed those media whose Title starts with (*) (where * is an upper-case letter) and whose File resides within the Saint Margaret's Church, Swinton folder or any sub-folder.
Other users wanting a similar change would have to edit the Plugin to adjust those two filter conditions.

Hi Mike,
Actually, oddly, for photos without the (*), it seems to have left the caption but removed the photo title...mmmm...

Re: Removing name caption from report
Craig, don't confuse what appears in Report captions with what is actually in the Multimedia Record fields.
The Report captions are usually governed by the Report Options > Pictures tab Show Captions with Pictures options. If Inc. Year of Picture or Inc. Individuals' Age or Inc. Picture Title or Inc. Notes are NOT ticked then those items are excluded from the caption, but the Name of the Individual/Family is always included.
The exception is where the Multimedia Record ticks the Exclude from Reports or Use Note as Caption options.
The former excludes the picture entirely from Reports, the latter uses the Note Caption regardless of the Pictures tab.
To see these Multimedia Record settings and its Title use the following methods.
First I advise using Tools > Preferences > Records Window tab and set all Record Type Display Options to Always show so all the Records Window tabs are revealed.
Then on the Records Window > Multimedia tab all the Records are listed and can be sorted by any of the columns.
You will see they all still have their Titles and a double-click will open their Property Box.
Similarly, the Multimedia Window lists all the Titles and a double-click will open their Property Box.
To reveal the special options, either click the [+] next to the Title or open the All tab of the Property Box.
Then click the [+] next to each Link/Note. The options can be changed here but is a little fiddly.
Alternatively, open an Individual Property Box (e.g. George CULPIN) that lists a picture on its Multimedia tab.
Click the Edit button for any selected picture to open the Edit Media Item window.
Here the tick options and the Note Caption box are shown at the bottom and easily changed.
Note that even the pictures whose Title does NOT start with (*) still have their Title.

Re: Removing name caption from report
Thanks, Mike. I have found the little note link which can be edited. I think the full photo title was not automatically being displayed and just the name name caption, because I had linked to the faces in the photo rather than just using the simple link.
