Re: KB Link question
No, the get link button does not seem to work for me in the same way the KB chain link does. e.g. I Search for the Property Box: Facts tab and display that Help page. Then get link produces: https://www.family-historian.co.uk/help/fh7/hh_start.htm#propertyboxfactstab.html i.e. It does not display j...

Re: Dealing with AGE anomalies
I always put the age as given in the source, even if it's patently inaccurate. FH will display it with a (!) in the fact list to highlight the anomaly if you have a birth date. But you can only be certain that it is an anomalous date if you are certain (and precise) about the birth date. I'm not su...

We're getting way off topic, but I have an 1858 marriage of Jane Parry in Caernarvonshire. Her father was Harry Pritchard. It took a lot of work to track down that marriage!

Re: Standard name
If I assign a standard (alternate) name to someone the narrative says 'also known as Aaron Sargent' - this statement is not true , he was never known by that nam e, it is just a way to index a standard name. If I uncheck Inc. Alternate names, all alternate names are not used. I don't want that eith...

Re: Standard name
We seem to have two possible approaches, if I'm understanding matters correctly. Assumptions: Variant surnames are shown in documents for some individuals; those variants are all to be associated with a single 'standard' surname; no individual should 'display' a name they were never known by. (Foren...

Re: Standard name
Mike, I think Linda is talking about recording an equivalent standard name for the many variant names that are found in documents and associated with individuals. And Adrian is suggesting an alternative approach -- not recording the discovered variant names for an individual but recording the 'stand...

When you go to File > Project Window, what location shows underneath the list of projects? Is it the location you expect?
It is possible that the sample project and your project are in different directories.

Re: Checking string is ASCII
Mark, not tested but I've seen suggestions that if you create the ini file as an empty UTF16 file just containing a BOM, it will then accept UTF16 characters. See http://archives.miloush.net/michkap/archive/2006/09/15/754992.html . This is of course assuming that CP are using the relevant Windows A...

Re: Backup and Restore FH Settings via Windows - new plugin
This makes the plugin ever-more complex with various niceties and options added, leading to an unsustainable maintenance overhead as user requests pile up. I have often thought that trying to be all things to all users makes a plugin hard to use and hard to maintain. I too will probably stick with ...

Re: Checking string is ASCII
With reference to chcp, I'd be interest to hear how people interpret this (form chcp . Programs that you start after you assign a new code page use the new code page. However, programs (except Cmd.exe) that you started before assigning the new code page will continue to use the original code page. W...

Re: Checking string is ASCII
Regarding point 2. a CMD batch script can contain full UTF-8 characters if you change its Code Page. Start the .bat file with the CHange Code Page command for page 65001 which is UTF-8: CHCP 65001 That works on any PC and temporarily allows the CMD application to use full UTF-8 characters during th...

If we're comparing backup regimes.... here's mine. Although I admit it won't be possible for most people, there may be ideas that others can take away. Primary data: on my PC 'hard disk'. Why not just create an empty UTF16 Ini file wherever you want to put it using
and then access it via fhGetIniFileValue and fhSetIniFileValue?

Re: Checking string is ASCII
It may not be by design, Mark. The documentation of the Windows ini file API is pretty poor, as that reference I gave you suggests, so CP may not even be aware of the way it works.
