Re: Citing English Churches
I'm not driven by any external "standards" or publisher house style, so following my "necessary and sufficient" model of what do I (or any other researcher) need to confirm the source of the information, my minimum citation would be in the style of Baptism Register - Tottenham, M...

Re: Ancestry Synchronization Lua Error
Hi Matt - there is a draft version available at the link in this post . Since first publishing the link, I have updated it to version 2.3.2 to include an additional refinement requested by another user in direct correspondence. I suggest you try that out, and if it fixes your issue, it can be submit...

Re: Can you password protect FH7 projects?
Bear in mind how much personal data is already in the public domain - as well as the Civil Registration records, there are also wills (Probate Office), property ownership (Land Registry), full address and month of birth (Companies House for the relatively high proportion of older middle-income peopl...

Re: Syncing FH7 Media Info and embedded image metadata
The missing step is updating FH Media Records from an ExifTools-derived spreadsheet.

Re: Syncing FH7 Media Info and embedded image metadata
It certainly sounds possible. I’ve used ExifTool in batch mode before for bulk reading or updating file metadata, and a plugin should be able to manipulate the required scripts.

Re: Age calculator able to convert alternative calendars
Interesting - we learn something new every day! I did of course search for "Hebrew" in the FH help, and there is no reference, and I'd forgotten about that dropdown. I checked online again, and today is Iyar 22, 5784 in the Hebrew calendar. FH accepts that as a date (a birth date for a dum...

Today there is no news (observation...)
I was looking at the Family Historian Notice Board , which is linked from the FH Help menu. There have been no entries for nearly a year, and just one new item in our own News and Announcements in the past year. FHUG going quiet doesn't matter, as we are only a user group, but the Notice Board is CP...

Re: ODBC error with Ancestry Synchronization
There has been no further follow up to this, so I will assume that the OP has either solved the problem themselves or lost interest. I will delete the link to the diagnostic plugin, but it can be resurrected later if required.

Re: Age calculator able to convert alternative calendars
I think this will need more detail to make it to the Wish List, as I'm not clear exactly what the issue is. The only reference to the Julian calendar in FH that I am aware of is the option of setting the date of the change to Gregorian as either 1582 or 1752. This affects the calculation of time int...

Re: Surname variants
I agree it can be a little confusing at times. Unless you add additional columns as Mike described, the Records Window will only show the principal name, irrespective of whether alternate name is ticked or not. However, if the alternate name option is selected, the individual will be included if the...

Re: Is it possible to merge facts for a person?
Jean makes a valid point above. Don’t feel you have to use any of the automated tools if they don’t fit your workflow. I’ve tried all of AS, DEAs, and the current crop of specialised plugins, and they just don’t work for me. FH is just fine working manually, made easier by the Clone any Record plugi...

Re: Is it possible to merge facts for a person?
Even then, both facts can still be valid of course. I have an uncle who was listed twice in the 1911 Census - once by his parents and once by an aunt and uncle who appeared to be hosting a family party at the time with several cousins listed who probably didn't live with them.

Re: Error with Export Gedcom File plugin
I would expect that all these apps would have a chat facility if users felt more comfortable with that rather than audio, particularly if one of the parties did not have English as a first language. It's probably not the time of year to start a detailed exploration, as forum use tends to decline dur...

Re: Error with Export Gedcom File plugin
Camera is optional, as the user and helper don't need to see each other - I don't usually bother connecting mine if it's just a general presentation to a wide audience. All that matters here is the audio and screen share, which can be limited to just FH, not the entire desktop. The plugin author can...

Re: Error with Export Gedcom File plugin
We have a standing invite within our local FHS group for users with problems with particular software to reach out for a one-to-one Zoom session with somebody with relevant experience. I’ve not seen it used for plugin support yet, but it might be an option for this type of more obscure bug if the op...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations
I think you are right. I tend to be allergic to fields that always have the same value (e.g. a census citation is only ever indirect evidence for birth), so why bother filling it in every time? If there is anything to discuss around a citation (e.g. quoted age at death is five years out but on balan...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations
I’ll feed back observations on the new version later, but to comment on citation assessment, I think John is right to be cautious. IMO, there is not a valid set of values that could be sensibly defined as defaults for all sources and all facts. For example, an index entry could be argued as Direct a...

Re: Creating unique splitting-method source name
To clarify, FH does not require a unique source name, but I agree that the carbon-based life forms can keep track of them more easily if they are. I too prefer relatively short names rather than long essays, and my typical source title follows a What: When (year only) - Who, Where style. Typical exa...

Re: Some Media Records Missing From ISR
FH - it is an old 32-bit application that can never use more than about 3 GB of RAM, so it doesn't matter whether you PC has an i-9 CPU, shed loads of RAM and an M.2 PCIe SSD or a Pentium, 4 GB RAM and a mechanical HDD (it's faster, but can't cope with larger data sets). It would be nice if FH8 were...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations
Gary - couple of points to clarify... You seem uncertain about the background to the various methods for accessing the England & Wales GRO Indexes. ONLY the GRO themselves have access to their original registers, no matter how old. That is a legal protection, and it would require primary legisla...

Re: GRO BMD Index Citations

Re: Missing fact
This arises from a significant difference in design between RM and FH. FH takes as its starting point a strict adherence to GEDCOM. As a result, it distinguishes between Events (which generally have a date and place, but no value, such as Birth), Attributes (which generally have date, place, and val...

Re: Birth certificate not found at GRO England
Holborn is part of the London Borough of Camden, which also extends to much of the surrounding area, so it is likely that Peter was born within its modern boundaries. Checking online, they appear to refer all applications for copies of pre-1940 certificates to the GRO and no longer offer a search of...

Re: Birth certificate not found at GRO England
Welcome to FHUG, Eleanor. Have to checked both FreeBMD and the GRO’s own online catalogue, including spelling and name variations? They are independent compilations, so you need to check both. It might be worth also checking the local Registration Office for where he was born, just in case it was mi...
