Re: Finding the County for a list of Towns
Early in my research, i bought an old Bartholomews ‘Gazeteer of Great Britain’ from a second hand bookshop, and found it invaluable and often refer to it. The other book I found very useful was Phillimores ‘Atlas and Index of Parish Registers’, this was bought new and cost about £50, expensive but a...

Re: Finding the County for a list of Towns
Adding to what Mike said, it is also complicated by towns in different counties having the same name.
E.g. Loughton, a town in Essex and also in Buckinghamshire.
Me thinks this could be a long slog

Re: Data entry question
Helen and Adrian, I hear what you are both saying, but may I point out that we are talking about Genealogy, where the truth can sometimes be uncomfortable, but it is what it is. The niece and her wife are ‘not’ both the childs biological parents, so I think it would be wrong to show them as such. Sa...

Re: Data entry question
Personally, I’d add an another ‘unnamed’ partner to the mother, and the add/attach the child directly to her. You can arrange the order of her partners as you see fit. When she is in focus, you’ll see her two partners, one her wife, the other the unnamed father of the child, with the child showing a...

Re: Date entry abbreviations
It seems the simplest solution for OP (i.e less typing) is to use the shortest entry possible, which is 1914-1918. Just let FH insert the correct phraseology.

Re: Show Named List membership in Property Box?
Helen, ever heard of automation  When i began creating my custom IDs, I simply did a find and replace. I can’t remember exact details but basically For everone in direct ancestor list, replace REFN with J+Ahnentafel - simples. Plus I think I have more direct ancestors than Arthur. It took me no...

Re: Show Named List membership in Property Box?
Arthur, I did understand your scheme, i.e only direct Ancestors have your special ID, and what I suggest doesn’t interfere with that. What I was suggesting was to Append the family ID of everyone in that branch, irrespective of them having a current ID or not If the family Name is Smith, append Smit...

Re: Show Named List membership in Property Box?
Arthur, Just extend your Custom ID scheme by appending a letter(s) indicator to indicate the relevant branch. Your existing custom ID will have the addition, but your no-direct ancestors can just have the addition. e.g If you decide you want to indicate your SMITH branch do the following 1. Those wi...

Re: Show Named List membership in Property Box?
Arthur, A simple way to achive what you want, is to give everyone a custom ID, to indicate which branch they belong to. I do a similar thing using a custom ID to indicate who each person descends from. Fig 1 Modified proprty Box.jpg This show how my custom ID for Blanche appear in the header of the ...

Re: Convert Flags to Facts
What I use is a custom ID (CUST). Mine is based around ahnentafel numbers prefixed with a letter to aid sorting (e.g. I use J for my family), and a different letter for other families. You could do a similar thing using your prefixes A,B,C & D etc, or utilise your own scheme, the choices are end...

Re: How can I delete empty birth and death facts
One possible reason is that you as soon as you enter a birth, death or marriage date (or place) into the property box, a birth, death or marriage fact is created, ready to store the data entered. If you then realise you made a mistake and simply delete the data, the fact is left behind, but with emp...

Jane,
That works, but somewhat defeats the purpose of the ‘who is logged in summary’ at bottom of page.
I may be logged in but I am no longer on-line!

:D It would apper the chosen colour does not stick. I chose orange, being the closest to the original, but it reverts to blue when i log out, definitely not to my liking :| Seems to work for me. I picked brown and when I logout and log back in the brown is still there. Bill Bill, i meant it reverts...

Re: Age Field
To say for example Fred Smith died in Swindon, in 1856 age of 56, is, I would suggest, grammtically incorrect.
It should either be at age of or aged
I would suggest that CP chose the latter, it being more compact. Why use three words when one would do

UPDATE It would appear to be an error on my part. I thought the new Individuals WERE in correct order when I added them, but having repeatedly tried again, it would seem they couldn't have been! Additional Individuals ARE added to end of file in the custom order they were added. Re: Problem editing a book.
The records must still be sorted before clicking OK. They were, but although they were correctly added to end of book, they were added in a random order! I wonder what would happen if book contained AN33-64, then I try adding AN1-32? I’ll keep playing with it, to see if I can make sense of what is ...

Print to PDF puts the file in C\Users\....\Documents and calls it Family Historian Report . Gowermick: does that help you find the files which apparently disappeared into the ether? I need to check, but in my case, because it happens with all apps (Notepad, Openoffice etc), i suspect that the above...

Re: Problem editing a book.
Sorry Mike, I hadn’t realised the ambiguity. I am creating a book of ISR’s and specifying which individuals to include and in what order. The book creation process creates each ISR in the order I specified. The book contents then shows a separate entry for each of the individuals included i.e 32 ent...

Mike, I’m fully aware of what a PDF printer does. Problem editing a book.
I created a book of ISR’s, adding individuals in custom order, using their Ahnentafel number (AN) I started with individuals with AN’s 1-32, and book was created successfully. Satisfied with the result, I decided to add the next group of indivuals with AN’s 33-64 to the book, again in custom order. ...

Yes ( I couldn’t have seen the profiles if it was missing  ) But it doesn’t act like a normal printer, as Print Test page also sends print into the ether. I think I’ll follow your lead and use a different PDF printer for printing in future, as the Save as PDF works fine! As you say, too much ha...
