I've just created a full backup (via FH) and can confirm that it does not contain the .....\Cache\Thumbcache.dat file.
However, a backup I created in October 2017 does have that file in it, so it looks like things changed with the latest version of FH.

Re: Warning Message During Full Backup
OK, that's the FH thumbnail cache, each FH project will have it's own file. Depending on how many media items you have, that file can become quite large, and if you've deleted or renamed media files FH doesn't seem to tidy the file. You can (and I and some others do) periodically just deleted that f...

Re: Warning Message During Full Backup
The FH thumbs database is not the same thumbs database that Windows keeps. In my FH folders my thumbs database is at D:\_Data\Family Historian Projects\MyName\MyName.fh_data\ Cache\ThumbCache.dat , I don't have any Thumbs.db file anywhere in the FH Project folders. Do you have that ThumbCache.dat fi...

Re: Additional information sheet
That doesn't help if you make the mistake that jmurphy describes, ie. you accidentally don't include all columns in the sort, so some columns are unchanged and others are sorted. Been there and done that! Always have a copy that you can revert back to.

Re: Using the media folder
You do need to be aware that if the total path name to a file (eg. C:\Users\Public\Media\UK\Census\1851\London\Islington\Rogers\Frederick & Christine.jpg) gets to be longer than 256 (I think) characters, including spaces, \, & etc. then some programs will object and not find the file, so you...

Re: Importing from Ancestry and merging records
I've given up with importing from, and exporting to my Ancestry tree. Instead, if I'm using Ancestry to follow up on hints, or even just searching on a person within the tree (via their profile screen), having verified the information I'll add the facts and sources to my Ancestry tree, and then dowl...

Re: Plugins/macros
Have you tried AutoHotkey https://autohotkey.com/
I use it in many applications and not yet found any where it hasn't worked, and I've just checked that it does work for entering a name in FH.
Edit. and it's free.

Re: Tutorial on Queries
I don't think that you can open two queries at once within one instance of FH, but you can open a second instance of FH (even on the same project), and open a different query in each. Then you can copy and paste expressions from one to the other. BUT - BE CAREFUL if you open the same project twice, ...

Wasn't sure whether to ask this here or in a new post - happy if you want to move it. I have a Fact query that shows where I have facts with no sources (Unsourced Facts query downloaded from KB): Fact Query.JPG I want to add a column which shows the relationship of the individual (or individuals for...

Re: Usability of FH with/without the Book
When starting out with my genealogy adventure I only had a quick look at a few other products before settling on FH. I have no regrets. I've downloaded the v5 book, but only use it for reference, likewise the Knowledge Base. I have no intention of reading them from end to end. What I regularly (almo...

I find it easier to have FH start with the Individual Records window displayed ( Tools...Preferences...Startup... then tick Display the Records Window, instead of the Focus Window, at Startup). Click Apply and OK. Restart FH. Then from the Individual Records window find and select the individual tha...

I've raised a support ticket (#856067) with Calico Pie, and referred them to this thread.
Will report back here any communication from them.

Re: PLAC and ADDR Records; Sorting
I've taken to exporting my Place Names to an Excel file, then using that to sort (and filter). Bit of a faff but it works. Useful when entering place names in Ancestral Sources, so I can get the field structure consistent with what I have in FH. Once upon a time I'm sure AS used to lookup the Place ...

I think it gets confused where there are blanks in a Place field. This is reverse sort ticked, sorted by 2nd Last. It hiccups on the 5th Last:

Re: FH and windows 10
I don't disagree Mike , but I do think that it helps if you know a bit about the structure and where things should be, and then maybe think carefully about changing anything, or recognising that something is missing or in the wrong place. As for the Knowledge Base , mountains of valuable information...

Re: Research Advice for a Newbie
The GRO website has a useful and free search facility for birth and death registrations (Births: 1837 –1916, Deaths: 1837 –1957). You have to register to access the site, but I've not had any spam email as a result of registering. Also they have introduced an option whereby having found a birth or d...

Re: Renamed Cemetery, Hospital et al
Yes, it is a widely adopted strategy to only use Place fields and disregard Address fields. Tools > Fact Types can even be used to hide the Address field in the Facts tab. So is there way of hiding Address Fields in all facts (i.e. globally) or does it have to be done individually for each fact type?
