Place levels in FH
A different view: I tried the recommended way and then, after some experimenation and thanks to the real flexibility of FHist, decided to go my own way with places and addresses. So I do not often actually use the address function - yes it means I have a lot of places, but it works for what I want f...

Custom Event: Death of Spouse
I am with Jane on this one - I started off with both events and attributes but found that events (even if they were 'events') did not work for what I wanted. So I use attributes - and I have a general one that I use to record all sorts of dated but miscellaneous information - letters, visits somewhe...

that was my thought too (I googled) but this sounds too 'modern' somehow - his wife is listed as a shirt cutter...
I jsut wonder if there is a bit of obfuscation here given other information I have been given but this is definitely what the census says!

1851 Census shows this as an occupation for someone who lived in Liverpool. The family think he was also a ships captain - any ideas what this actually means - I assume the two things are not related. I searched in old occupations and found nothing and have looked at on line dictionaries. Any hel...

Also have a look at Google Earth (you need a reasonably modern computer) - you can bookmark places and save snapshots as well (provided the sattelite has taken a decent enough photo). I've done that with my Uk relies

Thanks as (obviously!) I had not seen that thread - think, if I know about these U3 memory sticks, that they have moved on since last summer and the price has come way down. So maybe more people will vote

Has anyone used the Family Historian demo on a memory stick that uses U3 software to run other software as if it was a standalone computer?

One file for me too - and I have another file for a possibly connected ancient branch, but it uses someone else's research so far back which is very sus - I demerged/split it as I could not prove it and it confused my own researches.

This would be good (and save having to move columns around which is what I do at present) An addition/alternative would be to be able to hide columns

For certs I use the date and place of the event (born 12 july 2007 at Bristol Infirmary) and then put other information in the notes - and for the parents put in their house address in their events records.

Hi Dave I have not looked at my Victorian 'breed for the Empire' forebears - but I think it is dangerous to assume anything when women's fertility goes into the mid 50s - assumimg good health and nourishment etc. Having said that I suppose I would suggest that births over 45 are rarer... though defi...

Research Log
Pending Jane's method (which may appear on the Wiki maybe?) I would support a 'research log' which perhaps could also be used for those odd jottings that occur to one - not direct information that one has researched but the negative and emphemera (questions arising from research and what to look fo...

To be honest I don't care
Agreed - its fun, and refreshing when one has hit a brickwall on one's own researches. BUT I would only do it with the person's specific permission and would never bring it forward to search for people beyond the 1901 census in order to find living relies - they must do that for themselves in my vi...

How do you organise your files?
I file by family using my four grandparents as roots - a folder for the main family and when I get quite a lot of information on an individual I make a sub folder - certs etc get filed with the person or for marriage with the head of the family (so mirroring the male dominated FH programmes)or if (a...

Lost Cousins site ; free weekend 7 Oct 06
http://www.lostcousins.com I found my second cousin via this site - with which I have no other connection than as a user - thus finding ( or rather confirning my intellectual suspicion) that I was not the last of my father's line! For thos who do not know about it, you need to have the exact info fr...

That's my thought too for the first name.
Officer sounds a bit odd for a surname - but not got any other solution as that is certainly what it looks like! Is the census available on another site so that you can see what they make of it?

Verbal Sources
I record things said to me with reference to the person who gave me the information (joe Bloggins observations 31 Feb 2006) - and do the same with email which I regard as conversation rather than definitive evidence.... I also have a 'personal observation' source. I date all the entries and have...
