Mike,
Thanks for your advice, I shall give it a try.
I have tried to work this out for myself many times in the past but have always failed. I think that expressions and functions are just a bit above my skill level.

Re: Icons appearing out of date order in diagrams
I have a custom diagram that shows an icon (different in each case) where I have a source for birth, bapt, marr1, marr2,marr3, death and bur but only when the source assessment is "primary evidence". Currently I set the icons by using flags which I set from a custom tab on the property box...

Re: Childrens' gender
When faced with this situation of unknown children identified from the 1911 census I add the family to a dedicated named list. I add a note to the list entry to remind me how many children I am to look for. I can then look for them at my leisure.

Jim & Mike, Thanks very much for your helpful replies. Mike - The images are nor read only. Jim -I followed your directions (completely new territory for me) using Irfanview, and the images were orientated bottom left as you suspected. I have changed the relevant images to top left orientation a...

I am using FH 5.0.9 with Win 8.1 I have added a portrait picture to an individual. I added it by using the add media button on the multimedia tab of the individual's property box. The picture was taken with the camera in portrait mode but the camera has automatically adjusted the picture so it can b...

Re: Property box fonts
Mike Thanks for that explanation. Yes I have been trying to adjust the property box title with the property box floating as you surmised. I am able to adjust the title font with the property box docked as you said so I guess all is well. Strange though that the text font can be altered with the prop...

Re: Property box fonts
Mike, Thanks for your reply. I have just dragged out the old computer and reconnected it and the result is the same. I can adjust the text font but not the title font. By title I am understanding it to be the coloured bar across the top of the property box containing the individual's name, ID and in...

I have just moved FH v5 and my project to a new computer running Win 8.1 from a computer running Win XP. This gave me cause to adjust the fonts in the property box using the Property Box preferences panel. I can adjust the text font but am unable to adjust the title font. I tried this on my laptop r...

Re: Starting up Family History
Ruth, I too use mainly a desktop computer for my family history work but when away from home I use a laptop. I have copies of my FH project on both computers. In order to be sure which is the latest version, I have added a "notepad" document into the project folder. In this document I put ...

Re: Upgrading to version 5
David, Images of certificates etc would normally be attached to the event specifically and not to the person as a whole. Have you attached your certificate images to the person or to the event? To add a picture to and event eg birth, open the property box of the subject at the facts page. Highlight ...

Don't want to show 'Link existing record'
I cannot tell you how to eliminate this option but in the future you may wish to use the 'existing link' option if you ever need to link up a person who is already in your file.

Merge/Compare File
My understanding is that the 'check' facility is purely for your own use so that you can mark which records you have examined for compatibility [or not] and has no effect on the merge process. see page 171 of the v5 book 'getting the most from Family Historian'. Sorry I cannot give the page in the V...

Thankyou Tatewise - good stuff. Particularly useful to me was the advice to back up the FH Programme Data folder. This was not something that I used to do but I will now that you have clearly explained the reason to do so.

To deal with birth informant etc I have created a custom event 'birth informant'. Go to 'tools' 'work with fact sets' and then click on 'new' to create your event.
I have created custom events for bith informant, death informant and marriage witness.

Adding icons for the first time
I have tried this and I get on fine with the exception that I do not know how to get a blank diagram to use as in the instructions.
I can make it work using a normal diagram populated with at least one box.
Is anyone able to tell me how to get a blank diagram.
thanks

My birthday is this month and V5 is to be my birthday present so I hope it is not too long in being released.
Maybe we could be told if the release is still scheduled for February.

I think that icons are a very useful feature and I use them often. But there seems to be no way of telling what each icon means other than remembering. If a diagram with icons is given to another person they will have no means of understanding the icons. What is needed is a method of producing a 'le...

I see no reason why you could not split off part of your tree and then make that file the basis for a seperate project which you could then work on. I have several projects each of which are looking at a particular name in a particular area which I think may be relevant to my main file. When I have ...
