Re: Help modifying a query re 1939 register
If you record the 1939 Register as a census event and assuming it is the only census event in 1939 then a final line Exclude unless %INDI.CENS[year=1939]% is null should remove all those with a 1939 census entry. It is worth noting that the 1939 Register included people born outside England so you m...

Pat on the back for Simon Orde
After trash talk regarding software that uses GEDCOM as database Tamura Jones gave a very positive review for Family HIstorian and Simon Orde https://www.tamurajones.net/ARealDatabase.xhtml In the case of Family Historian, the use of GEDCOM as a database isn't a mistake, but a conscious choice by a ...

An example of two entries for the same birth event, note that this is how I record them and the data may not be in the same order as the original transcripts.. The frst is a transcript by the Derbyshire FHS of the Derbyshire Registrars Index, available via FMP. The second is the FreeBMD transcript o...

The order seems to be is based on the order of the sources in the listing in the record window. So you should go to that window and change the order to the one you want.

Re: How we are all descended from Royalty
The dodgy bit of logic in his reasoning is You have two parents, and they had two parents and so on, two by two, so the number of ancestors doubles each generation working up your family tree, meaning that by 1600, one person should have 32,768 ancestors. This assumes full outbreeding, which is ver...

Re: How we are all descended from Royalty
More years ago than I care to remember I read and thoroughly enjoyed a book by Darrell Huff entitled "How to lie with Statistics". It was published in 1954 so it may seem a bit dated now but the principles remain the same and the advertising industry was then and still is the expert on the...

I don't particularly like the "me too" type of response but I have to agree with Lorna and MIke and say that whatever problem you think you have now will pale into insignificance if you do wholesale deletion of individual files based purely on record number. You really need to hand out som...

The focus window and the records/named list window can be shown side-by-side (but not synchronized) by using the Windows>Tile.. menu option. The property box if open will also show. The toolbar buttons still work as expected and it is necessary to use the Focus button to align the focus window to th...

Re: New search for the Forums
To use Google search on FHUG you need to add site:www.fhug.org.uk to the beginning of the search. I use Chrome with the extension toolbar button "search the current site" which does that prefix for you (and of course works in the same way for any other site you wish to search) For example ...

I suspect a terminology problem due to the labelling of the "Go To File Root" button as "Home". Searching for "home individual" yields nothing in the help file or the knowledge base, "root individual" shows this terminology being used in report options but no ...

Re: Child wrongly identified in census
It is also worth remembering that in the 1841 census relationships to the first named person in the household are not given and hence even identifying Frances as a child of your great great grandfather is an assumption and may be false. I agree with Mike that the source should be entered as is and I...

Re: How to Handle Probate information
Just having a further look at the sentences. If you add ",executor and beneficiary" after each role = of executor and beneficiary in the main probate sentence then the individual will be in the list of beneficiaries and in the list of executors. I admit that I use witnesses very sparcely s...

A naive suggestion: create a role of "Beneficiary & Executor" and construct appropriate sentences.

e.g. In the Sources For pane, a Citation can be deleted using the X Delete Citation button and replaced by using the + Add Citation button. Not sure whether or not this is relevant here but I found out recently (I have no idea how long it has been available) that changing a single source link is available via the All tab of the property box. Select the name of the source and right-click, one of the options is "Replace Link With..&q...

Re: Source Record with Place Data?
I have no sources with these fields but a look at the GEDCOM specification suggests that they describe what might be called the scope of the source, i.e, the types of events covered (which should be a list of tags separated by commas, so CENS not Census I think), the date range and the place of juri...

I thought that sounds easy but in fact there seem to be a number of steps unless I am missing a simpler way. Assuming you are using a Method 1 census source then one way is this: Focus one of the individuals in the household on census day. Go to the Facts tab of their property box and select the app...

The Printer Setup Button on the right hand side of the report should enable you to choose the size you want and is reflected in the preview, although not obvious since the preview is expanded to fir the screen I think..

Looking at your options. Following Mike set the maximum picture width to 8", select Enlarge Small pictures to maximum width then click the gaps box and add a gap of 1" to left and right. This should give you a centered image 6" wide. You may have to tweak the settings to get it right....

Looking at the Change Log this is a very active pr...

Re: Multiple census entries for one year.
I can't answer the OPs question but I would point out that there are other circumstances where individuals are listed twice on the same census and these are just the ones I have come across in my file. A great-aunt who married just prior to the 1911 census and is listed in both her father's househol...
