Add Media to FH Not Responding
I'm finding that fairly frequently when I copy a .jpg into the Media files and then add it to the person in relates to, FH freezes up "not responding" and sometimes to the point that I have to shut down the computer. What am I doing here that would cause this. Only happens since v.6. Thank...

Re: Americanisms
At the risk of sounding "too American" though of British descent from a progenitor of the 1600s, perhaps all of this discussion is: Much Ado About Nothing?
I'll be more than happy for Simon to put in a spell checker that has all English/UK based spellings! No problem.

Re: New Pre-release: 6.1.2
Other than the discussions above, is there yet a general affirmation that it is now time to do the upgrade - or are we to expect some more modifications that might either solve or create more problems/questions.
I really only want to do this ONCE.
Look forward to input from Tatewise.

Re: Duplicate Individuals
I agree that if the answer to "is this the same Clarissa" is yes, then it would make sense just not to allow the entry. I have no idea how that would work. FTM uses the "let's merge your new/duplicate entry" instead, which does leave you with just one entry. FTM would not merge a...

Re: Duplicate Individuals
Hi all, Thanks for all the comments re the value of an instant check in FH for a duplicate name. To answer Mike's questions: After FTM asks "is this the same Clarissa Sherwood", FTM then pops up a merge screen with options for the merge. Therefore, no duplicate ends up in the file. Of cour...

Re: Duplicate Individuals
Hi Mike, To clarify - I just did an experiment with FTM v. 2011 which I use to check out the more "iffy" lines before I do any FH input. Here is what I did: I have a Clarissa Sherwood b. in New York State in 1843; daughter of Samuel, b. 1796. I added another Clarissa Sherwood - as daughter...

Re: Duplicate Individuals
Hi Mike, Thanks for your input on the duplicate names issue. I have your plug-in, in fact it is running now as a test of current listings. With the size of my database, it will take over two hours to run. I did also run it sometime past and it does a thorough job. However, what I really need to have...

Duplicate Individuals
Hi Mike, I voted for an automatic check for duplicate names in 2012 and have made comments regarding it since then obviously suggesting that it would be MOST useful. I know nothing of the complexities of constructing a program such as FH. However, the feature that questions dates that are being adde...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?
Hi Mike, I sent a note to Calico Pie re the need to update the help section in v.6 previously mentioned. I did get what is probably an auto response. I also included one of my pet peeves that is on the Wish List i.e. automatically check for duplicate names when making an entry. Think that might move...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?
Hi again, I did get my FH v.6 and it installed with no problems. It picked up nicely so there was no learning curve. I still do not connect FH to the Internet so that "instant clue" feature with the various online subscriptions does not apply here. There is however, a new feature? - that I...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?
Thanks again so much for the quick response re the named lists. Now planning to give myself an early gift of v.6. Hope I don't have to put out too many questions when I get that installed and running!! But you know I couldn't do it without you! Best regards to all the great FHUG folks for a happy ho...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?
Hi, Thanks for the quick response and answers to my two questions. That sets me on the path to making the change. Of course, sorry again, I honestly thought they were the only concerns I had left. The one remaining - and I have looked through the v6 features presentations and I see no reference to t...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?
Hi, Back again with deciding re v.5 which I am now using or going to v.6. I tried searching for possible answers to the two following questions but guess my search skill here is not too great. So my apologies if these were already answered. 1. Will the same queries AND the custom queries that I now ...

Re: Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?
Have just gone through all the new features for V6 in somewhat more detail and am still wondering if I would experience any significant benefit. Since things like support for witnesses, Ancestral Sources, etc. are not items that we here in the US would be necessarily using [Ancestral Sources not at ...

Is V5 to V6 upgrade worthwhile?
I've been a FH user from V.3 to V.5 and have been pleased and helped with each upgrade. And always had helpful responses to my questions/problems from all the great folks here on FHUG. I looked forward to seeing V6 come out and carefully read about all the new features. Since most of what I saw did ...

Re: Places Query
Thanks Mike for the reply. Either user error or a hiccup in my FH must explain the earlier "non-results" that I was getting. Places now responds with results for the chosen spot. Locations, as I mentioned, returns all of my file even when there is NO location in any of the fields for that ...

Places Query
I have used the "places" query before but not recently. When I just tried to use it, nothing was generated. The query parameters box opened and had "loders" in it. When I put in what I was looking for nothing was in the result. I then downloaded the "places" query again...

Hi Mike, Yes I do have FH v.5.0.11 but just realized that since it was a new install [data and backups were imported from the old computer] but my none of my plugins got carried over nor the custom queries. You mentioned that had I used the migration guide those things should have been transferred. ...

Thanks Mike and Jane for the response. My old operating system [a dinosaur but WELL liked by many still was Windows XP SP3. Just installed new computer with Windows 8.1. Somehow programs don't transfer too well with previous settings - or is it that I am lacking some computer skills. Having used the same operating system for 10 years, the learning curve is quite pronounced. Anyway have managed to get FH, v. 5.0.11...

Find Duplicate Individuals
Hi, I just tried to run this plugin. Knowing that I have a large database, I let it run - and run - and run - somewhere in the neighborhood of 1.3 hours. And then it hung my computer. Should I just assume that it looks at so much that it won't work with a database of over 40,000? Still working at us...

Re: Occupations Per Census Year (and Gender) ~ New Plugin
Hi, I just downloaded and ran the new plug in. The only census year it showed was 1860 [US here folks] - and the list included "auto assembler" and other auto related jobs. What is it that I am supposed to get in this report? It obviously is not sorting by census year and there doesn't app...

I kind of have to agree with Gerry. The old front page was much easier to view the overall site and select where you wanted to go.
Not sure I understand what is still in progress - maybe that will make it easier to use.
Thanks again Jane for all your hard work.
