genealogical junk -- a dilemma
If (when!) I find that someone has 'copied' my work - and I know its mine because of the odd mistake which I have since corrected - I smile to myself and think 'They might have a big list but they haven't had the pleasure and excitement of the hunt for all those relatives.' It can be very disappoint...

Wall Chart Style
The diagrams/charts on Family Historian are as variable as you want them to be. Everything can be customised. Do you have FH yet, or are you researching its possibilities? If you don't have the program yet you can download a fully working, read only, Demo version. You could experiment with the diagr...

Using icons and flags to show BMD's
I did manage to get coloured 'dots' showing for BMDs and a little cross for children who died young - great. Then I wanted to send the diagram to someone and didn't want the icons showing. The only way I could find was to remove the condition in the diagram options. Then later I had to re create the...

Have you been able to find them on a census? It is the right period of time for the available censuses. You can sometimes be sure its the same person/family by the makup of the group. If it is a person by themselves who just decided to start calling himself by a different name - then its much more d...

Deciphiring a Census entry please
It might just say 'Relative'. There is some ink up there where the top of the L should be. I have seen this before and assumed it meant they couldn't think of the name for the relationship but they were sure they were related somehow!

Family Reconstitution using FH
I run a FH file for a One Name Society. We have all the families with that name on the one file. If I find there are some connected ones it is then easy to connect them up. If a society member wants information about their own branch I just split a Gedcom off for them. There is no problem with havin...

duplicate census entries
Yes, I've had that sort of duplication as well, although one of them has a line drawn through it. They obviously discovered therir mistake but it remained on the record. I have also had several instances of a person/persons being recorded at two places on the same census. It is usually one at home a...

Researching Family History
The places you mention in Yorkshire are all over the county. There is not just one central archive for Yorkshire so you would need to check first which ones you would need to contact/visit. Alternatively, as has already been suggested you could order microfilms at your nearest LDS Family History Cen...

Transfer files from Desktop to Laptop
I mostly use our desktop but there are times when I want to put all the Family Tree stuff on the laptop to transport it around. I make it a GOLDEN RULE not to alter any of the files on the laptop - I can see myself getting in a terrible muddle if I entered some info on one and some on the other! I m...

Enumerators do help........Sometimes
I had an 1891 entry for some of my family and the enumerator had drawn a map at the start of the section to show where all the streets and courts off the streets were - very helpful, specially since the area has since been flattened.

If you are new to FH don't be afraid of it. The beauty of the program is that you can use it at many levels. Start off just using what you need - don't worry about all the super complicated things! If you are like me you would never start if you tried to understand all the advice above all at once! ...

I have just been back on there and it still seems to be open. Its well worth looking IF it covers your area. It is meant to be a cross section of 19C life and so just a few selected papers. I hit lucky and found my errant gg uncle cropping up in a dozen Police Court reports! It answered the question...

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
Yes, Nick that's what I meant! FreeBMD is much better and is in fact the 'original' one. The transcribers' work is put on there first and later Ancestry display it. There has always been a bit of a time lag. I presume Ancestry support the work of FreeBMD in order to be given the chance to use their ...

Question re Ancestry FreeBMD Marriage Index
In the early days of the GRO there were FOUR marriages to a page and therefore EIGHT individuals. Perhaps this is why you have sometimes seen more than two couples? Personally I always use FreeBMD itself for these transcribed indexes. I find it much more user friendly than Ancestry in this case. Anne

I'm pretty sure that a person is re-registered on adoption. I don't have personal experience of this but from reading other forums I do believe it is so.

Finding duplicate records using a custom query
The problem with having two people entered in your file gets very difficult in my case. I have a lot of completely unrelated families and many records given to my project by different people. It is fairly obvious that some of the records are about the same people but because the data was submitted t...

Online sources of English and Welsh BMD amp; Cens
Always remember that 'less is more' when searching the census indexes! Also I always go straight to the actual image of the page rather than the transcription - I prefer to trust my own interpretation. I began doing census searches with actual images on fiche and CD. I don't find it at all surprisin...

FH other uses?
I have just taken over the job of managing the records and research for a One Name Society. Its a bit of a challenge but FH is helping by answering a lot of 'queries'! I have done a Search for Orphans, which in effect sorts the individual records out into unrelated groups. There are 109 unrelated gr...

Thank you, everyone for coming to my rescue. I think I was too tired to read the Help instructions properly! Robin your method was exactly what I wanted. I had it done in 5 minutes. Excluding living relatives
I have sucessfully made a gedcom file for all the relatives of one of my gggg grandfathers. I used the split tree helper. Now I want to exclude the most recent generations (those who could be living) so I can send it to a contact. I must be being very thick tonight but I can't seem to do it![confuse...

Have you got a selection of the children's birth certificates? A wesleyan minister would most certainly not have had more than one wife. If that was his sole occupation the birth certificates would show if it was the same man. (Unless he had a cousin of the same name and occ!!) I have a Wesleyan min...
