Re: Source help

No disrespect here Jane, but what the hang do you mean by 'reference Alt-Clicking', as it makes absolutely no sense to me. But someone saying 'Simply' probably means I should know what it is and its uses.

Re: Source help

Mike , I never thought of doing that (although I had just discovered I could use the same method for sorting my titles out alphabetically) so no excuse for not thinking of that, trying to find a solution to something that is already solved. Thanks again for more Tatewise perils of wisdom and everyon...

Re: Stopping Age Count

You both describe and solved my problem perfectly, the same as in my post starting Problem Solved. As I had said, in FTM I just added died into the Died: date field and that stopped it showing ages of people who were dead as if they were still alive today. As you both say to get the same result in F...

Re: Source help

Hi Helen, I had a quick look at Named Lists and will be using them, you and a few others had suggested them when I had been suggesting a simple to-do list in another topic. I had just been asking about the use of short titles when the thought about using it for a marker more than anything came to me...

Re: Stopping Age Count

Mike It doesn't make any changes to previous ages, I was just looking for a way to stop FH showing the age of someone today, that was already dead. I had noticed my mother was showing as 82 yrs old (she died at 49), this was due to me still not having added her date of death, which would have been f...

Re: Stopping Age Count

Problem solved. Thought I had read all the bits I could find in Getting The Most...… but I had missed a bit. I looked through them again and found I could add anything in the Died date field by putting the word in double inverted commas. So if I add "Dead" in to the field, it adds dead in the died f...

Stopping Age Count

Me again, Started back at the tree and have just realised something that I don't know how to stop (No smart comments about there being lots of things :D). while entering some data I realised that a couple of the individuals I had entered had ages older than they actually were at death. With FTM I ju...

Re: Media Locations

No what I meant was that I didn't want to put information in the wrong place, only to find that if I passed the information on to someone in a GEDCOM file the information ended up in the wrong place. As an example the William Clegg saga about entry dates. His suggestions although quite sensible to m...

Re: 'Known As' Names

Thanks for that Mike, I had found the + beside Name before but didn't realise that the alternate names appeared in reports. Exactly what I was looking for and I will look at the Knowledge base section you suggested as that should solve all my issues. The Aunt part was just me explaining where I thou...

Re: Source help

I meant to say 'I see citations as proof of facts about a person' but this has all stemmed from me describing how my mind works when I am working with FH, not what I actually do. I was trying to explain why I had maybe said things the wrong way in other posts. I am quite sure if you look through all...

Re: Media Locations

Don't think I mentioned not using GEDCOM specs. I said Just read that gedcom spec, so putting the tree on hold and going to go away and have a long hard talk with myself about why I decided to change software and redo my family tree   So was just having a bit of a laugh about having a look...

Re: Source help

Okay here goes again. I didn't mean I put all the citations against the names, just that the way I thought of each individual was as a name. So I would put a birth citation against the birth of that individual, their address against a residence fact and their wedding date against a marriage fact. I ...

'Known As' Names

Hi stick with me on this one as my example will take a bit of explaining. I was wondering if there was a place to put a 'known as' name in FH. Here goes:- I have a cousin who I always called Aunt Margaret (Never found out she was only my cousin until after my mother died), she was christened Maggie ...

Media Locations

Hopefully simple question here and even more simple answer. What is the best way to store media in FH? All in one media folder or add separate folders in the media folder and if I do the latter is there any issue when exporting.

Re: Source help

Hi Lorna, I thought that was the use for short titles and I know it is not for notes. I was only thinking of it for a short term use say from the time I shut down my laptop one night until the next time I was using FH or maybe the next. The example that I used just popped into my head while typing u...

Re: Source help

Brent, I was only nosey about how it worked, just in case I had a use for it later on. I name my sources the same way you do, in the Long Title, I was more worried that if I started to put a note in the short note saying 'Still to Finish' just to remind me I had still to do some work with the source...

Re: Source help

Hi again Helen, Hope you type quickly, as that was some reply :D . I know it was written to make a point and the point is taken. In my view every citation that is attached to an individual, be it name, birth, wedding, death or anything for that matter is against there name. This may not be correct i...

Re: Source help

Okay Adrian, where would you put the date you entered the information in FH if not the entry date? I would say in most cases for me that would be around the date I found the information, as I try not to leave things lying about too long or I end up forgetting why or what the information I have, was ...

Re: Source help

Lorna & Lorna, My point was that even though the citation was against a fact, the fact was attached to one person. I maybe missing something in FH but anytime a citation for a wedding date it is in an individual I put it against and FH makes the connection to the other person who also gets a separat...

Re: Where to Record It; in FAMILY HISTORIAN

Advice which is just rubbish. Page 19 (from marriage certificates). : "Residence is more to do with the two fathers rather than the individuals getting married so the next step is perhaps to record where the two sets of parents were living at the time of their descendants marriage"! I kind of agree...

Re: Source help

I see what you mean Mike, I have always comma separated and added country to locations. That was what I was meaning about doing it uniformly, if Getting The Most..... had a table (I know this may be a simple view of it) with three columns with headings 1 Data, 2 Where in FH and 3 Reason then say if ...

Re: Source help

I agree with you Mike about using Author for District and County, but if you actually think about it, it does make some sort of sense as you could class the author as the registrar and that is the Registry area they work in. I am not saying it is right, just that it does make a bit of sense using a ...

Mike, what advice is misleading in the William Clegg booklet? I ask because I would still like something like what is in the booklet and if I just made the corrections in the booklet I would be able to still use it or something like it for reference.

Re: Source help
