Re: Best way to move between desktop and laptop

Just one question

When you have OneDrive listed on the File Explorer does that take up space on the computer hard drive or is it 100% in the Cloud?

Re: Find Census Information to enter into Ancestral Sources

I always save the census image in a census folder of the year.

As others have details the title of the image I add at theend the name of the person and the year he was born

Like an example above RG13-0603_Fo-52_Page-10 Joe Bloggs 1860

Re: Father ?

I have something similar. I name the child surname as the mother's name at the time of birth and list these separately with no father. My grandmother had two children a few years after my grandfather died. Their birth certificates do not list the father so I presume they both had different fathers. ...

Re: Is Family Historian easier to use than FTM?

I have been using FH since it was first released. I also have FTM and use that to find other information. From time to time I copy my tree from FH to FTM. FH is always the primary tree The usefulness of FTM is that it provides links to other peoples trees and lots of other information like census, a...

Re: new upgrade for FH6 which is 6.2.7.

I have tried a number of times to upgrade to the latest version. When doing so I get a message saying it will close FH. That is fine but eventually I get another message saying it is still open. I know it is closed but couldn't go any further so had to cancel the upgrade. With the link shown on this...

Re: Ancestry search hints

I wouldn't worry too much about this. What is far more important is that your tree is on FH I have my tree on Ancestry but only use it there for the leaf to connect with other information that is available on Ancestry. I never copy any tree from Ancestry to FH. What is on FH is the true accurate tre...

Have a look at English Heritage web site. They have a lot of old historic photos of the whole country and there might be one of the building you are looking for.

Re: Sources, Citations and Methods

Hope I am not too late on making a comment on the census images When I save the image I put in the census reference with, at the end, the head of household's name So if there are two households on the same page I put the head of each household at the end of the census reference. It does mean having ...

Re: Female Married Name

If I don't know the maiden name of the wife I put her husbands name in brackets e.g. (Smith) When I do find the maiden name I change this to her correct name. One must also bear in mind the wife could be having another marriage so if you see her name it could be her previous husbands name. Always be...

Re: How to Enter Place Data for England?

Don't forget Yorkshire. It is divided into three Ridings, North, South, East plus York.
There are similar place names in more than one Riding. e.g there is Hessle in both East and West Riding. Scalby in both East and North Riding.

Re: Full Backup per project several times a day.

I don't do backup everytime. Only once in awhile. Whatever changes I make to FH is 'saved'. When I do a backup I delete the previous backup. If you keep previous backups it will reduce the storage space on your PC or wherever you back them up. So do delete old back ups when ever you can. Maybe keep ...

My grandfather was illegitimate born in 1862. He was registered under his mother's name, George Briggs, and also baptised that way. His father is not known. His mother married Charles Markham in 1865. After that he was known as George Markham. I have not listed him as Charles's child but have used t...

Re: Using OS Map refernces in Map

Just a thought. How about asking OS Maps if they have date to include Lat and Long in the map references or at least provide a link. I never use Post codes I just leave them for the postal services. These days if you post a letter from a place it doesn't always get that place postmark. e.g. letters ...

Re: Recording GRO Index Birth/Death sources

Thanks Anne Dade was the name I was trying to recall. As you say there are many other parishes giving these birth dates. It was all down the the clergy writing them down but these are unofficial. Who cares if they were they are a good source of information. That was why the Archbishop wanted to make...

Re: Recording GRO Index Birth/Death sources

If I see a so called birth date before 1837 I treat that as a Christening date unless it states 'birth' or 'born' From memory some parish councils (in Yorkshire) added the birth date in the margins of those Christening dates. There is a name for this. I will have to give a thought of what it was cal...

If the record is small enough you can use 'snatchMyScreen' and mark out what you want to copy Once you have done that go to the focus window where you have added the details on FH then prompt the fact tab and then open the media ikon which will open a menu. The ref details Mike mentioned only applies to those from the GRO BMD's BMD's from local registry offices have a different reference number. These references are based on the location where the event took place and are the original certificates before they are sent to the GRO and are different. Victor

Re: Importing from external drive

I have learned that when you view 'large ikons' in the files it takes up space on your hard drive. So when you have finished looking at the ikons change that page to 'list' and the space is reduced. Do this to all the pages when you are not viewing images. Only when you get to a particular file chan...
