But.... we were talking about the Media folder when you gave your advice.

The pathname length however is a very good point.

Re: Media folder

I believe that Windows performance is slowed when there are too many files in one folder. So if you expect to have thousands of FH Media files, then Media subfolders are good for efficient performance. Not necessarily true -- depends on what you're doing. If you're viewing them in Windows explorer,...

Re: Media folder

I'll add that I'm increasingly thinking that I can have a flat structure in my Media folder , or probably just divide it into a few folders: 1. Photos (images of people and places) 2. Sources (images pdfs etc of source documents) 3. Interviews (written or oral records of interviews with family membe...

Re: New Multifact plugin

Mike, I've now had a chance to do some detailed testing and I spoke too soon. Snag 1: on a large (3340x1440) screen the plugin overflows the bottom of the screen -- can be easily fixed by setting the start window position. Snag 2: The plugin window flickers repeatedly when moved, resized or when an ...

Re: New Multifact plugin

Thanks, Ron.

I've dropped this into user.lua and it seems to have done the trick -- hasn't changed the default but added fh_lua

Code: Select all

local luaspec = ide.specs.lua
luaspec.exts[#luaspec.exts+1] = "fh_lua"

Re: New Multifact plugin

the resizing only adjusts the height; the position & width stay put.
You keep missing the point -- adjusting "only" the height isn't acceptable. It completely messes up a carefully constructed windows layout.

What happens (for example) if you snap the plugin top-right?

Re: New Multifact plugin

The extension thing drive me nuts -- if you use a decent Lua IDE, fh_lua isn't an option.... so I have to save the file with a different extension. Grrr.

Try this.

Re: New Multifact plugin

Yes, in your terms Aero snap-- although docked is a more generic term. The problem also exists if you have a monitor with 'windows display management settings' -- I can for example set my screen to have six windows in a grid -- or one full height window on one side and two half-height windows on the...

Re: New Multifact plugin

Mike,

With your suggestions, changing the state of an expander on a docked window undocks the window and changes position height and width -- any of which would be unacceptable without the user requesting them.

Re: New Multifact plugin

Another small change that I thought allowed larger names and facts without wrapping is below: Line ~966 in local boxPeople replace hbox with vbox Line ~1032 in return replace hbox with vbox Yes, but as the main issue at present is keeping the height of the plugin within bounds, this doesn't help --...

Re: Multiple Private Notes in a query

Mike, do you have a scenario in which you'd want to attach a Research Note to a Citation rather than a Fact or a Source? For any Record type, adding multiple Local Notes or Shared Notes to the record works. It is an issue for the notes associated with Facts -- not because you can't have multiple Not...

Re: Deceased/retired Occupation

Transcribe exactly as the document says it -- in an ideal world: don't correct, don't add, don't subtract.

The answers to this question on Genealogy.Stackexchange.com may help -- there are fairly-widely used conventions for denoting text that you've added or text you can't read.

Re: Deceased/retired Occupation

I'd record a 'retired' occupation as the occupation with a 'before date' based on the certificate; you might also consider recording a 'Retirement' fact again with the 'before date' (although I personally don't bother). I would NOT record the Occupation as "Occupation (Retired)" because that's not t...

I put it in with a 'before date' -- either before their death if I have a date for that, or before the marriage otherwise. If you don't think it's obvious why you've chosen that date ypu can add a note. Same with the death date of anyone shown as deceased on a marriage certificate -- died 'before ma...

Horses for courses. I don't like tabs as an interface for routine data entry. I use them for example in the Research Planner for configuring templates, but for something like Multifact it's very helpful to have the option to to see everything at once .

Also, some of your suggestions affect my '...
