Re: Installing FH on New Win10 Computer

You have forgotten how you did it before!
You must select the .zip file in the right-hand pane, with just the D: drive selected in the left-hand pane.
( There are no .zip file items within the compressed .zip folder you have chosen so the message is correct. )

Re: GEDCOM 5.5.5!

I have now inspected the 5.5.5 specification, and you are correct (but only for Gregorian Dates), although that does not totally invalidate my example, as 5.5.1 and 5.5 use the same DATE specification, and 5.5.5 has just that tiny variant that could be handled with a control parameter.

Re: Source Types (usage of the FH field)

Yes, that is certainly true, but also be aware of which features in that product involve GEDCOM custom extensions, and minimise their use to maximise portability via GEDCOM to other products. Also be aware of which features have no GEDCOM representation at all, such as Fact Narrative Sentence Templa...

Re: GEDCOM 5.5.5!

There is no fundamental reason why each reader & writer for each GEDCOM version cannot be a separate component of script. However, such components could/would/should share sub-functions that handled GEDCOM sub-structures that are identical in the different versions, e.g. DATE fields. That would also...

Re: Witness notes

Sorry, I have been away. This answer applies to both of you. See how_to:display_long_text_like_notes|> Display long text such as Notes . So for 1st paragraph you need: {=GetParagraph(%CUR~WITN.NOTE2%,1)} Then for 2nd paragraph you need: {=GetParagraph(%CUR~WITN.NOTE2%,2)} That must be repeated for a...

Re: Installing FH on New Win10 Computer

Bob, checkout the Knowledge Base > Family Historian V5 & V6 Migration Guide.

Will you continue to run FH on both old and new PC?
If so, the above advice gives some pointers.

If you use AS then don't forget to migrate that too.

Re: Source Types (usage of the FH field)

Sorry, but I have been away, and now notice my name has been mentioned in despatches. The full list of FH extensions is in glossary:gedcom_extension_list|> GEDCOM Extension List . That also explains how each is typically handled by other products, and how it could be exported. However, as others hav...

Re: Occupation - Date

On a slightly different tack, I also 'normalise' the Occupation so a standard set of jobs are listed by Tools > Work with Data > Occupations. So for example, regardless of what the Source actually says, I record Agricultural Labourer for Ag. Lab, Farm worker, Farm Labourer, etc.

Re: Grandchildren with unknown parents

Yes, you need to perform a little research. You know the full names of all 5 pairs of parents, and the children's forenames. So searching the GRO Index with each set of parents over a reasonable year range should find all their children. If you have subscription for Ancestry or FMP then enter the fa...

Re: where is the error?

Keep in mind the distinction between Lua features and FH features.
According to the Lua reference manual debug.getinfo(...) provides info about functions in the script.
So that won't help with Plugin filenames, which are a feature of FH so need an FH API function.

Re: Template Codes

There is nothing wrong. The simply indicates where a newline will appear.
The Sentence box is only two lines and cannot be expanded, so if it actually displayed the newlines, then often little or no sentence text will appear unless you use the vertical scroll bar.

Don't understand why FMP can give hints on FH who I don't subscribe too but suddenly MH can't!? Both FMP and MH usually give 'hints' regardless of whether you subscribe or not. That is because records are 'searchable' for free on most subscription sites. ( Try setting up a free account on Ancestry ...

Re: where is the error?

I have realised there is a more efficient way of testing for UTF-8 characters in a string: isUTF8 = strTxt:match("[%z\1-\127\194-\244][\128-\191]") ~= nil That returns true or false depending on whether a UTF-8 character exists in strTxt . FYI: That pattern match is looking for character codes zero ...

Re: where is the error?

Yes, all fields that can hold user entered text may have UTF-8 characters, even Date fields as they can contain a Date Phrase of free text. The only way I can think of to test if a string has UTF-8 multi-byte characters is to compare length(strTxt) versus #strTxt and if equal then it does not, or if...

Re: where is the error?

Where is EditPadLite7.exe installed?
It may be necessary to include the full path.

Perhaps try substituting notepad.exe for EditPadLite7.exe and see if that works as required.
If so, then you need to investigate why EditPadLite7.exe is different.
