Re: Recommendations on good video for FH7 Diagrams

Thanks Helen. Unfortunately; there wasn't a video that specifically addressed the aspect on which I needed help. However; in trying to locate something, Caroline O'Neill on the Family Historian Zoom Group suggested a document she had had prepared called, "Diagrams & Charts in Family Histori...

Recommendations on good video for FH7 Diagrams

I'm looking at my imported data in a "Relations" diagram. As I'm just getting into using the diagrams and need to fully understand the implications of the symbology, is there a good FH7 video that will help?

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

I'd certainly go for that, Helen. It probably only needs to be a sentence or two.
However; I'll leave that to those who know what section and which article to amend.

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

Mark;
I've noticed other posts and articles on getting FH running on VMs. Also; advising users that UNC paths may cause issues for some FH plugins running on non-native Windows platforms, and suggesting a known solution, may avoid unnecessary posts in future.

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

Thanks, Mark. I'll likely look into both options again in more detail at some point. Right now, I'm just anxious to make sure I can save the configuration and roll back (if I make some configuration error). I think that mapping virtual machine drives in a workable way (for FH7) might be something th...

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

Mike; I tried something different and it worked well. For Parallels users, the correct way to set the backup path is to select a Mac drive mapped as follows. In my case it comes up as the "Z" drive. This give the Windows program the type of path structure it expects and places the backup o...

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

Mike; Sorry about not showing the Backup tab. The board seems to limit the number/size of attachments. Here it is: Screenshot 2024-02-28 at 5.50.26 AM.png As noted; I think it is that the Windows program is getting confused by the virtual machine paths. Colin's suggestion might work, but I need to f...

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

Mike; I believe the issue is not specifically relating to a Mac, but may be due to running FH7 and the plugin under a virtual machine (Parallels). The reason is the way the virtual machine represents external paths to files. [I "think" CP had an issue with this and RM9 media imports at one...

Re: Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

Mark; What I felt was some sort of looping in the Windows backup program could easily been due to my running Windows 11 (ARM 64-bit) under Parallels on an M1 Mac Mini. It's unlikely you were able to test on that platform. I didn't mean to imply that it was solely due to the plugin. I tried the alter...

Backup and Restore Family Historian Settings 3.6 giving errors

Mike; I'm trying your plugin, since the alternative sends my FH7 installation into some sort of loop. However; I'm getting some odd errors with your plugin. Could you help me understand what I'm seeing? Here is how I've configured the backup directory. Screenshot 2024-02-27 at 5.49.21 PM.png Here is...

Re: Where does FH store its diagram icon files?

I found Inkscape, which does a nice job.
Unless there are specific file-save settings required, no further action is required.
Thanks, everyone.

Re: Where does FH store its diagram icon files?

Thank you, everyone. I found two .EMF sets, which I think will do the job. One is "Chriss FH EMF Icons" and the other is "Census Icons". With the help of Using Icons , I have been able to get things working... or so it appears. If I can find an .EMF icon creator app, I'll likely ...

Re: Where does FH store its diagram icon files?

Mike; When I use file explorer to try to locate the "C:\ProgramData\CalicoPie\Family Historian" directory on the virtual windows 11 machine, I finally found the directory. Oddly; it seems to already have many of the typical icons that I thought we had to add. Did this change recently? [As ...

Re: Reload Media Meta data and also write

A while back, I contacted CP about what metadata they imported from an image file. In the course of those jails, I suggested that they support an option for importing the IPTC fields that are compatible with the existing FH7 media data-fields. The current FH approach depends on one having a Windows ...

Re: Question about "Essentials" template set

Teresa; I see nothing wrong in making some adjustments to a style to make things work for oneself. Publishers certainly create their own unique style and I don't think the FB pundits would dare to criticize them. I understand that ESM has also tweaked her "standard" style in her new book. ...

Re: Question about "Essentials" template set

Oddly; the MacDonald book actually explicitly advises against using the access date, but does employ the URL. It seems that everyone has their own version of the "Essentials" templates and, likely, so will I. :D --- Just a late add... For me, the site and URL are important, especially with...

Re: Check For Unlinked Media (FH7) - new plugin that can search in all locations

Mark; The new version of the plugin is helpful, since I store my media outside the project directory. I was wondering if it would be possible to show the file extension in a separate column, so sorting by filetype would be possible? I tend to keep supporting documentation in the same structure as my...

Re: Question about "Essentials" template set

Thanks, Helen. It's curious, because the Essentials collection is clearly Strathclyde-based and this is one place it noticeably deviates from that standard. I've both the Strathclyde manual and the MacDonald book, so I will take the essentials templates and "tweak" them to align them bette...

Question about "Essentials" template set

As I'm seriously looking at using a Strathclyde-like citation style, I've been playing with the Essentials collection templates. to see if they would work for me. I've noticed that many of the templates have a Collection and URL field that are never actually used. While I am quite capable of cloning...

Re: Citing English Census

Agreed. I was struggling with that bit about the TNA Class. What do you think about reversing the initial elements to make long or short footnotes sort better sort better, if used as Captions? Example: Census returns. England. 1911-04-02. Hertfordshire. Watford. BUTTERFIELD, Herbert E. RG 14; RD 140...

Re: Citing English Census

Adrian; Thank you for the feedback. I understand your point. I'm trying to work through the rationale for citing things in a particular fashion and my EE-style background is showing. :D Perhaps the following is more in line with what you are suggesting. For the UK, I think this style would work well...
