Re: Installing V7 on a second device
To the best of my knowledge, everything has now been transferred over from Parallels to VMware Fusion Pro 13 and is working. That means quite a yearly savings and opens the possibility of getting a FindMyPast renewal. :>) Tomorrow will be a day dedicated to cleaning up any loose ends and doing some ...

Re: Installing V7 on a second device
Finally found the missing piece of the puzzle. VMware Fusion Pro 13 does not yet have the capability to directly access one's Mac files. However; there is a way to share one or more directories via Mac "File Sharing" and get roughly the same effect. My path to my data is something like \\M...

Re: Installing V7 on a second device
Thanks everyone. I finally discovered the correct code to deactivate and then was able activate FH7 under VMware Fusion. I then installed the VMware Tools, in order to get the dual screens to operate at their intended resolution. Fh7 seems to work just fine within the virtual machine, but can't acce...

Re: Installing V7 on a second device
Mike;
Neither of the system names of the virtual machines match either device code.
I wonder what FH7 is using or how FH7 constructed it?

Re: Installing V7 on a second device
I'm seeing two activation codes that are active, when trying to activate a copy of FH7. I know I only have one previously activated on a specific computer. How do I tell which code pertains to the one I have on that computer, so I can deactivate the other? Is the code displayed somewhere in the inst...

Re: Installing FH under virtual machine on a Mac
I'm considering moving off Parallels due to the high cost of subscription renewal. The current Knowledgebase article helps a bit, but I'd like to hear from someone who has tried other alternate virtual machines. Can someone tell me; Is VirtualBox a product one needs to purchase? Are there any notabl...

Re: Citing English Churches
Teresa; It helped me figure out the "official" name and parish etc. for various church buildings, since the names seem to differ somewhat between genealogy sites. As many English churches are formally listed historic buildings, this particular site is a good "standard" for their ...

Re: Should marriage auto text pick up the County name?
Thanks, Nick. I wasn't aware of it and my search didn't turn up that post.
I also noticed that the way the vicar filled in the form could lead to other transcription disconnects, so I just decided to edit the generated auto-text, just as I do to add the reference number.

Should marriage auto text pick up the County name?
Should marriage auto text pick up the County name from the "place" field? As one can see in the following image, the County has been entered, but does not show in the auto-text title. image.png Perhaps the potential variability in various user's "Place" formats requires that one ...

Re: Question about burial surname change by A.S.
Nick; I tried the method you suggested and it works for females. Unfortunately; {KEYPERSON.SN_ORIGINAL} is not populated for a male. As one cannot have two different formatting strings for the source title, the suggested fix really doesn't help. If the {KEYPERSON.SN_ORIGINAL} tag were populated with...

Re: Question about burial surname change by A.S.
Thanks, Nick. Your suggestion is very much appreciated.
I use the maiden name in the source title, but transcribe them as they appear in the record.
That way, in my source-name convention, the events for people sort together.

Question about burial surname change by A.S.
Is A.S. designed to switch a married woman's surname to that of her husband, when assigning a value to the KeyPerson variable?
My question relates to the more-or-less common practice of always filing under the maiden name. So this caught me by surprise.

Re: V6 Backup long pathnames
Mike; The Apple "Time Machine" backups record everything on the physical target drive, unless they are specifically excluded. I tried moving things over to a data directory off the root of the virtually mounted directory with a very short name. I measured the longest name now had a path+fi...

Re: V6 Backup long pathnames
Mike; The examples I gave were the ones that worked. I was only trying to illustrate the type of info I need to file. The suggestion of moving things outside the project is something that may make a significant difference. I'd been toying with the idea doing that. I already use the Apple system to d...

Re: V6 Backup long pathnames
Mike; I keep supporting images for groups of record images, such as for the book cover, title page, and first and last pages. In order to ensure that these sort with the images to which they pertain, I need to include some common info in the form of a path or filename. I've tried to stay away from e...

Re: V6 Backup long pathnames
I tried the long pathname switch on Windows 11. In short; FH7 does not work with long pathnames. This is a major issue for me wrt. using FH7. The only robust solution is to keep a special index file to cross-reference to a short "dummy" name in order to get the files into FH7. Once importe...

Re: V6 Backup long pathnames
I'm still having issues with pathnames being too long to both adequately describe files and still be short enough to be acceptable to FH7 and AS running on Windows 11. I've gone over the situation at length and see no practical solution for the files I need to store. I really only use Windows for th...

Re: Places changing names/jurisdiction, etc
Jackson; It seems to me that there are two key ways that people communicate their findings; a printed report and a map. The pin on the map is fine, if the spatial relationship between event locations is what one wishes to communicate. But; if one is interested in a printed report, as some are, then ...

Re: Places changing names/jurisdiction, etc
However I do have to change these to London, when searching on websites, who insist they are in London  "Gowermick"; I ended up looking at the GRO reference for a given census year and using the "County" they used. Typically this is also the one that is in the census image,...

Re: Places changing names/jurisdiction, etc
Adrian; For me it's a case of, when I can't figure out what to record, use whatever consistently geocodes best. That tends to be the top three divisions. For a "Place" in the UK, I typically use the parish, administrative county and the country. I put the street address and the town/villag...

Re: Places changing names/jurisdiction, etc
One thing that bothers me a bit with UK place names is the extreme variability of the number of elements in an address/location depending on time-period. While many countries vary to some extent, the UK seems to be by far the worst. This causes issues, because the way most programs are set up, one i...
