Re: Question about citations added to Media records

I notice that FH7 media records can have citations added. I've seen this in other programs and I believe I've seen it in the GEDCOM standard. I've always wondered why it's there. Could someone explain the practical use of this feature? Perhaps I'm missing something useful. I have tried this out - I...

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?

2. Fundamentally, for me, the date is the earliest date when I think the stone was erected . But this can be unclear. Normally I would put something like "After dd/mm/yyyy" where dd/mm/yyyy is the physically first death date on the stone. So if the MI reads "John d.1905, also his wif...

Re: Switching census record filing from Head-based to Sheet-based

Peter; I don't use shortcuts either. My issue is more that I can't implement what you suggest until I enter the data into the media gallery. To ensure I've removed all duplicates, I more-or-less need to first re-file the images in directories that reflect the physical documents or collections from ...

Re: Switching census record filing from Head-based to Sheet-based

I used to use shortcuts a lot - before I moved to FH - but now I rarely do so! There can be a massive amount of work involved in creating all the shortcuts needed. I have found that investing that time into creating effective sources in FH and using FH Queries gives all the indexing, cross-referenci...

Re: Monumental Inscriptions - thoughts?

Monumental Inscriptions is pretty well all embracing. "Cemetery" is probably a bit prescriptive - I have memorials from all sorts of places, that are not in cemeteries, or even churches - including - The First World War memorial book in Birmingham's Hall of Memory ( England ) The Scottish ...

Re: Switching census record filing from Head-based to Sheet-based

In my experience when two key households appear on one census page the key people have the same surname. So I have the Census page file named as: Media\GROCensusRecords\1881 RG11 1226 064 08 OLDEN, James & William.jpg The Media Record Title is the same as the filename. That Media Record is link...

Re: Show Focus Window Hints in Query

Thanks Helen and Mike,

I have used the Plugins. I also have a query that exports to Excel and gives me a table that shows missing BMD census records. I was looking to create a query to give a simple 'To Do' listing of ancestors with new / un-viewed 'hint' records appearing in FMP.

Show Focus Window Hints in Query

I have FMP hints set and the Focus Window shows how many record links there are for each person - for example as in the image below. Is there any way of displaying this information in a Query?

Media Type

I have searched the forum, but can't find much relating to Media "Types". In the Media Records Window one of the fields that can be displayed is "Type" as per the screen clip below. There appears to be no option for displaying this in the Media property box, nor can I find any wa...

Re: "Open source" for URLs

However, it is advisable to download such Media as a local PC file because URL have a nasty habit of changing. Mike makes an important point here - very few sites have stable URLs - a URL link that works today may not in just a month or two's time ! That is why most citation systems specify that &q...

Re: Should I just give up using the "EE" Templates

Exactly...and hopefully others can find it as well - if you can, then they should be able to. I'm not sure I could be polite about it! I looked at EE and decided it's not for me. My criteria is simple - does the citation contain enough info to enable me to find the source again. I totally agree - E...

Re: Deleting Custom IDs

Thanks Helen,

I saved "Records Identifier" as a custom query and filtered on "Add if Custom ID starts with IRN", simple job to select all ID's and delete. Whole thing only took a couple of minutes - saved me hours deleting almost 700 custom IDs individually.

Thank you

Deleting Custom IDs

When I moved from Family Tree Maker to FH7 I was in the process of changing the way I recorded Custom IDs. The "old" system used the prefix IND- which applied to almost every individual, but I have been applying an Ahnentafel based system using the prefix A. I am using my son, who died unm...

It is still a bit hit and miss - I ordered one recently and the image I received was for a different person completely (not even the same sex).

I got a refund, but had to order the pdf to get the right record

How do you get the popup feature? Is it only a Windows Pro feature?
Mike,

If you click on the date at the far right of the Desktop task bar a Calendar and Notifications box should pop-up.

A right click should display cogwheels for date/ time and Notifications settings options

Medals and other artifacts

I have a number of medals, WWI Death Pennies and Dog Tags, that belonged to members of my family, and I want to record these in FH. What methods do other FH users employ for recording artifacts such as medals. For some of the medals I have copies of the medal Index cards, but for Dog Tags and Death ...

Re: %INDI.DEAT.DATE:AGE_AT% does not work with Birth BEFORE dates

If the event was a baptism there's no reason they could of been baptised in their teens. Not quite sure what you are trying to say here - do you mean there is no reason why they could NOT have been baptised in their teens (or even later!) I have one family baptism record where a new born child, her...

Re: Research analysis and conclusions

Thanks. I was thinking of something of a list or a flag with report suppression. I am beginning to think i need to write my own user guide for this including formats, decisions, reasoning etc. I can see how amazing FH is going to be for the analysis that ancestry just can't do and I am excited by t...

Re: Research analysis and conclusions

In FH you can set Fact Flags to indicate the best or dubious ones, etc. e.g. Preferred, Tentative, Rejected So the "best" Birth event would have the Preferred Fact Flag. Other users prefer to have just one Birth event with the "best" characteristics and include an analysis of al...

Re: Multiple Selections in Enum Field

The custom enum field I use in my Source Template is specifically to record the FMP 'Collection' where I found the evidence. In some cases there may be more than one e.g. a baptism may be found in 'England Births & Baptisms 1538-1975' and also in 'Lincolnshire Baptisms'. It is this field I had ...

Re: Multiple Selections in Enum Field

Reading between the lines you appear to be mixing up the SOURCE event type with the FACT event type that it provides evidence for! A BAPTISM event in the Parish Register will show the baptism date. It may also include a birth date - but the SOURCE is still only a BAPTISM record. The Parish Record te...

It is a shame that the childrens portion at the very bottom isn't customisable too. I'd love to see place of birth alongside date of birth, there is certainly enough real estate, even just the town name would help when checking families against census. :D Same thing applies to the Focus Window! Just posting to say Notes are doing the job nicely, especially since I can add links to sources quoted. I do have one question, I am using the first line of the note as a title, as can be seen in the image below both the top row (alongside the yellow folder image) and the "Text" row show t...
