Re: External documents as Notes
Thank-you Mike and Helen. Mike's answer looks like the sort of thing I was hoping to do, but I will play around with both suggestions and see how they work for me. (I also have spreadsheets that would be very useful to link!)

External documents as Notes
I have seen a few posts about linking to Word documents as Media and also as sources, but is there any way to link them to Notes, such as Research notes? I have begun to use a Research log in the hope of becoming more efficient in my work (!) but I've also got lots of Word documents with, say, lists...

Re: Changes to notification defaults
As a relatively new and quiet user, I would quite like an email notification when there’s a response to my (initiated) post (but not on the odd occasions where I just reply, like here). I tend to use the forum only on Wednesdays, when I scroll down the digest, or when searching for an answer to some...

Re: "Non-geographic" place
Thanks for the helpful replies. Yes, if I use "at sea", then that is all that is known! And thanks Adrian - I have stopped geocoding of some places, but I hoped there was a way to show that in the text. I hadn't thought of Custom Attributes though - I'll have to have a play around. I very ...

"Non-geographic" place
That probably sounds nonsensical, but let me explain ... I want to enter some "Places" that are not physical locations, so for instance, Military place = "Royal Navy", death might be "At sea" (not specified more than that), and for dna matches, tested at "Ancestry&...

Re: Blank or general event
Thanks, Mike. I assumed that must be the case. I might just create 'Other' or 'Note' as you suggest. I'm not too concerned with the sentences (I don't tend to do reports etc) and it would only be a few entries, I think, so no great bother to adapt as I go.

Blank or general event
Is there a way to create an event without it having a title? I have a few events that would be good to note for evidence of a person being alive in a certain place and time, but they are perhaps a bit too specific to create a whole new custom event for - I suppose I could create 'Other' if need be ....

Re: Media attached to sources showing as unlinked
Thank-you for both these helpful replies. It does seem that some of them are duplicates, but Mike's suggestions of sorting by filename and by record ID have helped me sort them out! I know it doesn't make a great deal of difference to my actual records, but if I don't sort it out now, I'll be back w...

Media attached to sources showing as unlinked
I've been happily and successfully attaching media to my sources and citations, either manually, or using AS. But I've just learned a bit more about media and I'm going through my media, checking broken links, adding links to people where this is missing etc. I have opened the Media Records window a...

Re: not given option to save image to media folder
I have had the same problem and I managed, after some fiddling around, to reset it for one project. Now I've moved to my main project and I'm blessed if I can a) remember what I did, or b) replicate it. Please save my sanity and give me a clear instruction on how to reset it so AS prompts me for whe...

Re: Residence fact not showing
Within Tools / Fact Sets have you "ticked" the "Show Hidden" option - it is possible it's status may have been accidently changed to "hidden"! Yes, that's exactly what I had done! (and I thought I had checked this sort of thing). I knew it would be something silly :oop...

Residence fact not showing
I have a horrible feeling that the answer will be something obvious, but here goes ...! Residence is not showing in the drop-down 'Add fact' list, nor is it under 'More facts'. Residence does show for people, but I think this is where I have entered it via AS for BMD/Census etc. If I try to add it a...

Delete old project after backup
I really just want some reassurance on this before I do anything! My PC shut itself down unexpectedly a couple of days ago while I was working on FH. On restarting there was nothing showing in my project. Thankfully, I back up regularly and was able to restore from the backup (once I'd realised it g...

Thanks, I had looked but not found anything (biography is a good search term in hindsight!). The Biography attribute (? not fully au fait with all the terminology ... ) seems to be ideal.

Stories, narratives, newspaper reports
I am interested to know how people use FH in relation to narratives, such as newspaper reports, or, say, a biographical account, or a letter - but something that doesn't really fit into an event as such, or that you don't wish to use in that way. For example, my grandad won 2nd prize for his dahlias...

Changing sources to citations - tidying up!
Is there any simple way to change a source to a citation? I've pretty much got the hang of them now, but I do occasionally find something I've entered earlier as a source that really should have been a citation. For instance, My source, 'Find a Grave' also has the burial entry for John Sunderland as...

Re: Possible Research Note enhancements
I'm not sure if this is quite the sort of response you want, but here goes. Relatively new to FH coming from Brothers Keeper. It took me a while to work out how to make a To-Do list in FH which I now do using named lists - I tend to have one for a specific CRO or online resource (e.g. I have one for...

Re: Order of 'existing sources'
Ruth, could you explain why you need the most recently used at the top? (There may be a better method) What exactly do you mean by 'recently used'? Do you mean most recently cited? If you have just added a Citation and want the same Citation added to other items then use Copy and Paste Citation. If...

Re: Order of "existing sources"
Whatever the last sort order is used for sources in the Records Window, is the order they will be presented to the user when adding an existing source. Thanks, I hadn't realised that - that is well worth knowing. I had tried to sort in the 'Cite existing source' list/window, to no avail. I adjust t...

Order of 'existing sources'
Is there a way to get the list of sources when I click "Cite existing source" to put the most recently used at the top? Currently my list seems to be ordered by the number of citations - greatest first. I have found that the 'Show recent' button is not terribly useful - it often shows noth...
