column widths in focus window
How do I change the width of the columns in the focus window? I want to see the full person ID of the children but as you can see in the screenshot, the column is too narrow. I have wasted space after the death date column that I could use to expand the width of the name column but I can't figure ou...

Re: What am I doing wrong? Query for research notes by repository
Thanks, Mike! I totally misunderstood what that query was doing. I thought it would be an easy way to print out a task list for a research trip to a library. I was interpreting the links as 2-way and missed the nuance about one-way links. (One links are counterintuitive to me!) But I figured it out ...

What am I doing wrong? Query for research notes by repository
Hope I'm posting in the right subgroup! :) I'm using the standard "Research Notes for Repository" query but the query results are missing some of the tasks that I've linked to that repository. It looks like it includes my old tasks that I imported from RootsMagic (where the repositories ar...

Re: am I missing a setting? Attaching media to facts
Sorry, I've been offline for a few days and just now catching up. I'll explain my thinking. (And I'm willing to accept that my thinking may be backward or that there may be a better way to do it!) Reasons I don't like to use the check box to show media from the sources on the fact: It doesn't change...

am I missing a setting? Attaching media to facts
Hi, I'm using AS for census entries based on method 1. Although I always link media to sources, I don't like to use the "include source media" checkbox in the media screen for individual facts. I prefer to link the images directly to the facts. When I enter a census record using AS, each p...

more forgiving error range for ages
I keep trying to find ways to customize the property box and I keep running into the issue that it's not customizable, but here goes another attempt.... :) I'd like to expand the tolerance for the warning exclamation mark on inputted ages in the property box. For instance, if the inputted age is wit...

suppress select witness facts in property box
Hi, I have a custom fact that I use to make it easy for me to tell at a glance that the parents' identities have been proven with primary sources. It puts some text at the top of the property box, as shown below. The fact is associated with the child and the parents are witnesses (roles: father, mot...

Re: tips for sizing source pane?
Just a quick update -- the FH team was amazingly fast in replying to my ticket. They have replicated the error with the pulldown list when the source pane is docked below the property box and will address it in a future update.

Re: tips for sizing source pane?
Helpful as always, Mike. Thank you! I was able to use your tip about the delayed snip to open a support ticket. Let's see what happens! I voted for the enhancement to add a source symbol to the "more" column. Even if I choose to keep the source pane open, I still think that's a good idea f...

tips for sizing source pane?
Hi, I've been living with a frustrating problem with my source pane and I've finally decided to reach out for advice! I always keep my source pane docked. In the 2 years I've been using FH, I've sometimes had it docked on the right (my preference) or at the bottom (a modification I did when somethin...

automatic surname when adding a child in census window
I just updated to the latest version of Ancestral Sources and in my first usage, I ran into an issue when entering a census fact where a widow was head of household. This was a new family for me, so I also needed to add a child. I selected the proper couple (the widow and the 2nd husband) to create ...

Re: I can't get started
For what it's worth, I've been on your exact same software journey: started with TMG and used that for about 7 years, took a 10-year hiatus in genealogy only to come back and find TMG was shut down. Switched to RM7 and hated RM8, so I switched to FH7. I can't address all of your questions because I'...

Thanks, Mike! I like the plugin idea much better than relying on my manual steps. I'll have to try that this weekend when I get a chance to turn my attention back to genealogy.

I want to upload a GEDCOM tree to GEDMATCH to look for DNA matches that help me sort out the identity of my 4th-great grandparents. I'm also reluctant to publicly share details of my more recent ancestors, living or not, so I took what I thought was a guaranteed way of scrubbing my tree of personal ...

Re: automatic date sorting for facts?
Hi Mike, Thanks for the reply. Both of those facts are set to "lifetime". Your note made me realize that the sort function in the settings must be sorting the "All" tab rather than the facts tag. I just added a new fact and it is properly placed by date in the "All" tab...

automatic date sorting for facts?
I'm puzzled by the order of events shown in the facts tab. I've read Sorting Children, Spouses & Facts into Date Order so I know how to sort the dates manually, but I'm still wondering a few things: Is there a way to automatically sort the facts so they always appear in proper date order with me...

Re: Unable to add source for newly-created fact
I've had the same problem but I just chalked it up to my newbie learning curve, figuring I was doing some odd sequence that I shouldn't. Glad to hear it's not just me! For what it's worth, I found I can add a source to the new fact (vs. the "whole record") if I first add a witness. I think...

Re: Where did my family sources (proof of parentage) go?
Upon further reflection, I've decided that my main issue with the way FH imports RM family citation is the fact that it's in the "All" tab rather than some other screen that's more convenient. I need an easily viewable way to quickly see that I had supporting documentation for parentage. I...

Thanks, Mike! You're once again a lifesaver! Thank you, Robert. I appreciate the suggestion and was going to use that if I couldn't figure out the original structure. I'm using this one fact to help me figure out how these sentence structures work. I have bits and pieces of knowledge but I'm having a hard time seeing the overall framework amon...
