Military service records

Having just returned from a long break, including holiday touring abroad, I'm now struggling to re-associate my ageing mind with FH6 and its plug-ins, and all my previous work, in order to fulfil my promise to my good friend and complete his family history. So please bear with me, if I'm asking a da...

Re: Saving marker sets

Amen to that, I still have a very heavy DOS manual, amongst others, from the pioneering days.
Lost count of the times my friend John has retorted, "RTFM!!" in reply to "How do you.....etc.,"
Also, I never realised Apple was bad at manuals.

Saving marker sets

Yesterday, with the help of Mike and Lorna, and Mike's excellent Search and Replace plugin, I managed to get to grips with the intricacies of place geocoding and now I am making sure that all of my places are in the exact right place on the map. Also, I decided to colour code sets of markers based o...

Re: Multiple addition of place country.

Thank you both, very helpful indeed. The refresh geocoding trick worked perfectly. I was having a bit of a problem as I had forgotten how to make the markers portable, but now I have remembered how and all is well. I must say, that as far as genealogical software is concerned, this FH6 is the creme-...

Re: Multiple addition of place country.

Mike, it worked just fine. I really ought to study this software and it's plug-ins more thoroughly, but time is short....and so much to do. I am now looking into why on earth many of my newly renamed places, which are obviously over here, such as Bromley, Kent, England and Flixton by Bungay, Suffolk...

Multiple addition of place country.

My list of places has been designed to use 4 columns only, with no country, as they are all in England except one. Unfortunately, I have now discovered that the geolocation program puts many of them in the USA. (What would my grandfather have thought?) So now I have added the fifth column (he would ...

Re: Organisation of media folders

Thanks Mike, you put a very good argument together for not creating the folders, so I will leave it for the software to sort.
It seems to be the sensible thing to do given how well FH6 has been designed.

Organisation of media folders

I have spent an hour trying to solve a folder organisation problem using the knowledge base and all the help topics, but I am still not sure whether I have understood everything. So would someone please help to clarify whether the following is possible: Having started to collate data in the Media fo...

Re: Multiple instance of birth registration.

Mike, Once again, thank you for doing all that research into Samuel Hawes. I am going to be spending the weekend looking into all that and anything else I can dig up this weekend. The Drusilla Tar Hawes birth certificate (pdf) has been downloaded, and it states that Samuel Hawes is the father. She w...

Re: Multiple instance of birth registration.

Hi Mike, My, you have been busy!! I have just got back from doctors, shopping, seeing friends, so have not had a chance to look at your findings properly, but I can tell you that at first glance I think I have seen all those records, but I was unable to convince myself that it was the right guy. The...

Re: Multiple instance of birth registration.

Hi, Mike, how are you doing? Many thanks for the information, but nothing that I have not already recorded. I have all those records already safely sourced in my FH6. I just didn't have the Drusilla birth certificate to uphold my findings for the man I am researching for, my friend of 21 years John ...

Re: Multiple instance of birth registration.

Many thanks for that insight, Adrian, now I can see things a lot clearer. It does seem to be a bit of a pain, as you say, especially as the job of finding the correct registration is already difficult enough due to difficult to read or illegible original writing, poor transcription, illiteracy and v...

Re: Multiple instance of birth registration.

I have tried a "dummy run" ordering the birth certificate and I have discovered that Drusilla Laite or Lait, etc leads to "NO RESULTS". Therefore, I presume that there must be just one entry with GRO, and one certificate. That in the name of HAWES. It is a pity that registry searches come up with su...

Re: Multiple instance of birth registration.

Thank you, Mike.
So should I be entering HAWES in the GRO space for surname, or LEAIT? Because I can enter either, or both on separate requests.
Do they have two birth certificates or registration sets that differ, do you think?

Multiple instance of birth registration.

Apologies in advance if I have missed a previous answer to this, but I could not find it. There is a person called Drusilla, a Norfolk girl born in Bungay and baptised in November 1843, who's mother and ancestors were called various forms of Late, Laight, Lighton, Lighting, etc., due to illiteracy, ...

Electoral registers

Having discovered electoral register entries for where we were living in 1954, and other years, I am wondering how to include them into the FH6 project, now that I have become used to entering data via Ancestral Sources.
Happy New Year to you all, and I hope you had a great Christmas.
